Grief, by nature, isn't very linear.  Note the rush of feelings one usually feels at funerals of those that were near and dear.  The back and forth between the now of the story and multiple points in the past makes the grief feel very authentic and relatable.  Without the mixing of past-present the story wouldn't be nearly as good or compact.
