# About me

My name is Hai Phan and I'm a character artist for games.

I went to art school at SCAD, and then did 3d modeling for a naval subcontractor before I finally made the jump into games. I was at ArenaNet working on the Guild Wars series for nearly 5 years, and then moved on to Trion Worlds working on Rift and other projects for 2 years, and now I'm at Blizzard Entertainment working on Overwatch.

There's actually a lot more art work (especially if you're looking for old Guild Wars stuff) you can find on my personal web site: [link]

Thanks for stopping by my gallery!

hELLO! Amazing gallery, it's astounding to find professional gallery with lowpoly models for game.
Have you played final fantasy dissidia (PSP)?

Man I know you and your stuff for a while, amazing work you did there for all the big games you worked on.
I'm currently a student at a game arts school but sometimes... well it's not an easy job...
And now I'm playing Overwatch and remember that I know your deviantart account.

I really look up to you! You are kind of a role model for me.
I would do anything to just sit right next to you at work and learning form a true grandmaster.

Hello Hai, just want to thank you for making the amazing collection of tutorials, so far I'm on the 4th volume and I'm loving it, can't wait to buy the last two, I just have one question I've seen that all of your lowpoly models have a really nice wireframe with no crooked edge loops, how do you achieve that? is it part of some tool with in 3dcoat or is it by moving one vertex at a time ? I don't think my models are that bad, but so far I haven't been able to achieve that perfect wireframe with Mayas tools, thank you in advance

Great gallery, Hai Phan!

I've recently bought and watched all your volumes on CGCircuit, but I still want more! Zbrush / high-poly modeling specifically... I've recently got in it, and there's so much to take in, what with all the possible workflows involved in it (ex: when to use Subdivision, Dynamesh or Zremesher at the stage of modeling I'm in? ). I would also be interested in hearing your own personal tips concerning hands, feet and detailed prop-making (ex: ornate belts/bags/quivers...), for example, which weren't part of your volumes.

I'm also curious regarding your use of blocks of hair instead of the traditional sheets of hair... Suppose your company asks you to transition one of your characters to hair planes, how would you proceed? And if you modeled for a game knowing those characters used only hair sheets, would you even bother spending time modeling the high-poly hair mesh at all?

One final question: do you think Marvelous Designer 4 would be a good tool to add to your high-poly workflow? It's a clothing/fabric mesh simulator, and has been used in games like Metal Gear Solid 5, with pretty good results.

Thanks for your time!

Thanks for checking out my videos.  It's hard to definitively say when to use those modeling features in zbrush because everyone likes to work in different ways.  I usually avoid getting into specifics like that because what works for me may not work for others, and vice versa.  However, you're right that it could still be useful so hopefully one day I'll get around to making some more videos (although by the time I finish you may already have mastered everything on your own!).

For the hair, it really depends on the style you're going for.  Even when I do use sheets for hair, I tend to use larger shapes because most of the work I do is more stylized.  Using a lot of hair strips typically means that you'll be reusing portions of the hair texture which works better in more realistic art styles.  If I was asked to convert one of my models to use more hair strips then it would definitely be possible, but it would basically mean I would have to remake the hair.  I still think sculpting the shape of the hair is useful as a guide for how to arrange hair strips.  The main difference would be that I probably wouldn't need to refine the sculpt since I'd be relying less on normal maps.

Marvelous designer is definitely a great tool.  I haven't used it much myself, but I think it's going to be a must have for artists who need realistic clothing wrinkles and such.

Thank you for the answers, Hai Phan.

I'll definitely try to incorporate MD4 into my pipeline then. As for your videos, let's just say we never stop learning new things. So if you make more, I'll definitely still be buying and watching them.

Anyways, keep up the great work over there. Oh, and don't let those politically-correct people get to your art, please. I believe we're all aware by now of the flak you're getting from so-called feminists who are calling you and your art "sexist".

I've still not mastered anything yet, but thanks. I think the best advice I can give is to have a genuine interest in what you want to do and be ready to devote a lot of time to it. It takes a long time to develop for most people, and it's not for everyone, but if you're willing to put in the effort then you'll be fine.

I'm just one of character modelers on the Overwatch team.  We're just responsible for the modeling.  Here's one of my coworkers, Renaud Galand:
The actual character concept design is primarily done by Arnold Tsang:
Another concept artist on our team, John Polidora:

There are other artists too, of course, but I don't think they're on DA.

Hi, if you're still interested we can put some of your work into our Gallery.  We decided to postpone our Magazine to have the possibility to insert new features. Now we have a 3D digital/ Full interactive Magazine planned for the next weeks with the possibility, for example, to insert video gallery, photo gallery, links to website, 3D models in Augmented Reality, script html5 and so on. This magazine will be avaiable for apple and android devices. Within the next issues it would be great to insert some of  your amazing works and, if possible,  a link to a making of (but this is not necessary). That's it! if you're interested we need some full hd images of your works (with also images of production's stage: AO, Wireframe etc...), the label of copyright that we need to insert over the  pictures, and  some technical  information about the opera: name, software  used, information about special technics used, link to website and portfolio. Also, there's a possibility to use some materials for an animated cover.

Hoping in your reply, I offer you my best regards.

Just saw your 3d modeling posts. Amazing.

Out of curiosity...The "Mr. Z" painting, was that dedicated to someone near the John's Creek/Duluth area? I see that you went to SCAD and that face looks oddly familiar to someone I knew in Georgia.

Oh, it's just the standard Rake brush except I switch the alpha to Alpha 60 (one of the Zbrush defaults). They key is to use a low Z intensity and brush gently. Hope that helps!

You sir are an amazing artist, and I have fallen in love with the armour sets you've worked on, especially the medium armours (as a ranger, they work so well to capture that feeling of being one with nature.)
I must ask one thing of you though. If you remain in contact with the concept artist(s) responsible for the loading screens such as Brisban Wildlands, I would very much appreciate that you pass on similar words of praise. As good as the gameplay is, all these lovely pieces of art really make this game come alive. To all the artists of ArenaNet, I say thankyou.
