Current Residence: Baltimore, MDBorn in rural Connecticut, Katie Stone is working towards her Bachelors in Fine Arts in Ceramics at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Having grown up working on farms and buried deep within the horse industry all throughout her life, her body of work reflects on the conversations held between humans and animals. Katie has been featured in group exhibitions throughout Baltimore and a recent piece was purchased as part of Alice Falvey Greif’s personal collection. She previously worked as an intern at Artspace, and is the recent recipient of the Regina Brown Fellowship through the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.
Artist Statement
I don’t always feel beautiful,
but I always feel human,
and maybe that’s my problem
Back roads and small towns grasp at my strings. My body will always navigate towards the places tuned to a slower clock. The stutter of an old film reel; reading and reanimating images, resembles much of the flickering memories where I draw my imagery from.
Focused on the human animal experience and fueled from my personal history of farm life, my work is an exploration of dialogue and remembrance. There is something about the quiver of nostalgia I feel while leaning back, looking out over the fields while riding in an old farm truck. My feet resting out of the open window on the side mirror, breathing in the day of Cow Town, USA. Somewhere between the ambling bodies of cattle and stop signs riddled with bullet holes, I find my inspiration.
Those moments become souvenirs for a collaborative visual ballad of memories during childhood, admittedly quite romantic in nature. I can still remember how the farm truck felt beneath me as the old interior sagged within the heavy metal frame. It creaked, shaking off the rust at every dip in the worn farm roads. I can also still see the zig zag patterns, left by herds of fleeing deer in the waves of grass. Their images still so real and recent that when I close my eyes, I can still see the blur of their bodies behind my eye lids.
Like a patchwork quilt, these small town moments stitch themselves together. Through sculpting, cutting, and then combining these collection of images in clay, I create what one would call a cross section of a narrative based on “back road life.”
