For SVG vectors, they're all lines, fill colors, and gradients coded in XML and allow you to zoom in forever without becoming blurry. Because of that, they have a relatively small file size for simple images (most of mine are about 10KB) and huge file sizes for complex images (landscape vectors for example).
One cool experiment you can try is create a quick vector image, then open it in notepad. You'll see the XML code that makes it (without any unknown font characters).
