2) My personal gar-dar insists that Severus is straight, though Harry certainly seems to be bi. As am I, by the way.

3) Severus needs an adult lover, not a brat of former student half his age.

The only major female characters with actual personalities for Severus to pair up with are (1) Lily, who treats him like dirt and is dead; (2) Hermione, who is twenty years too young and nothing like as smart as she thinks she is; and (3) Minerva, who is forty years too old, though she probably has the best personality for him.

Since forty years really *is* too big an age gap, adult Hermione is the only one who is even adequate, but I find I've gotten to like the pairing less and less as time goes by. At this point my preference has decidedly tilted toward Original Characters, preferably muggles of his own age and class, or Sev as single. No one is required to agree with me, but no one is allowed to forbid me from expressing my own likes and dislikes.

At least you've got a reason. It's a weak one, but it's better than having none at all. I think Severus might argue that he can protect Harry better as an adult than as a fellow-student. The only way being a student might help is if young-Sev-in-disguise were as close to Harry as Ron and Hermione are. Then he would always be on the spot to protect Harry, though he couldn't make Harry stop doing stupid things any more than Ron and Hermione can. The real problem is that Harry doesn't make new friends. He has his two sidekicks whom he acquired when he had been in school barely two months, and he pretty much ignores everyone else (except Draco Malfoy, whom he hates with a mad passion for very little reason). I can't see him taking on another close sidekick in his fifth year.

Unless, of course, some sort of mind-bending magic is involved. I can see Dumbledore pulling off something like that, over Snape's vociferous objections. Snape may not be kind and supportive, but dammit he has principles!

(I’ve never liked Lily at all. She is not a real person, just a kind of this abstract representation of goodness and motherhood and martyrdom. It is so one-sided. She is almost like Holy Mary, mother of Jesus. Except the virginity of course.)

If Lily is supposed to be like the Virgin Mary, JKR shouldn't have made her so hard-hearted and unforgiving. Mary's principal characteristic is mercy. A merciful, Mary-like Lily would have wept with sorrow at losing her best friend instead of sneering, "Don't waste your breath," and refusing to let him finish his sentences. I've never heard of any legend of the Virgin Mary that included the phrase, "Don't waste your breath."

I'm enough of an unabashed Snape fangirl that I particularly liked the way the film showed Severus as more powerful than all four Marauders put together. I don't think he really was (more powerful than each of them individually, yes, but not all four together), but it was fun to watch them get their come-uppance.
