Hey thanks for the kind words. I was in school for a few semesters (Academy of Art) and figured I could save some money and study on my own. I've been at it for about 4 years now. I'm glad you like my environments too!

Oh that's very interesting to hear I'm always curious as to whether or not art school is beneficial or if it is possible to
study it all by yourself as long as you are dedicated.
Do you find you've developed your skills a lot more by teaching yourself?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jontorresart In reply to TylerHinde [2015-01-22 02:06:01 +0000 UTC]

I think so, but then again that is how I learn best. Trial and error. I don't want to totally discount school. I learned more on my own than I did in school but the traditional path clearly just wasn't for me and my learning style. I know there are those that benefit greatly from art school. I just saw the loans I was racking up and felt I could keep myself motivated to get to now and beyond. I would recommend gumroad tutorials too. Dave Rapoza, Eytan Zana, andΒ Maciej Kuciara all have superb tutorials for the price of a coffee and those really helped me. In fact here are some books you need to get if you want to learn on your own:

"Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" by Andrew Loomis
"Drawing the Head and Hands" by Andrew Loomis
"Digital Painting Techniques: Volume 1" Published by 3dTotal
"Digital Painting Techniques: Volume 2"Β Published by 3dTotal
"Digital Painting Techniques: Volume 3"Β Published by 3dTotal
"Human Anatomy For Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger
"Figure Drawing: Design and Invention" by Michael Hampton

Those books are the magic 7 that I have studied religiously for the past few years to get to now. Put aside around 2 hours a day to studies and you will be amazed by what you can do with time!

You still digging that yiynova LCD tablet? Found you were a user through the forms. Thinking of buying it myself (win7, have an intuos now). Figured I'd see if you had any issues yet. Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jontorresart In reply to daPatches [2012-07-28 08:51:50 +0000 UTC]

It depends. The monitor is not as accurate as your tablet is I'm sure. I'd say if you're comfortable with you're tablet and you're ok with looking at the screen but not drawing on it, than you should be ok without it. I like it in a lot of ways and there are a lot of things that still bug me. Like the accuracy and pen pressure settings (they are kind of fickle at times).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

daPatches In reply to jontorresart [2012-07-30 14:02:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah this is more of a "I just really want it" type of thing. Not something I need. My Intuos gets me by and I'm pretty used to it, but I tried drawing directly-on-the-screen and now I REALLY want to be able to do it all the time. I played with a friend's ipad and Sketchbook Pro. I HATED drawing on the ipad, but really liked that I could at least see what I was drawing directly. It just felt right, obviously lol. I wouldn't buy a tablet to do it though, so I was looking into Cintiq alternatives ^^. Sice I *am* so used to my Intuos, and it wasn't cheap, I really can't justify a Cintiq (I wouldn't want the small one) but I might be able to justify a knockoff.

Thanks!! Yeah I've read that sometimes people have to re-calibrate them often...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jontorresart In reply to daPatches [2012-07-30 16:21:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I re calibrate a lot. I mean, it's good and it's bad. Sometimes weird things happen in photoshop and that same problem never happens in painter (but painter would have a whole set of different issues you get used to haha). I'm not regretting the purchase of it of course, just that it's not as good as a cintiq. You ar eright though, cintiqs are just too over priced it's absurd. A lot of companies are coming out with knock offs, I'm sure as time goes on and they start competing more with Wacom, we'll get some more quality tablets on the market for bargain prices.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

daPatches In reply to jontorresart [2012-07-31 14:57:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I really don't think it's fair, the people comparing these cheaper ones to the leader in the market when they're a quarter of the price. I mean really.... lol. It really helps open up demand past artists and hopefully will drive the price lower. I'm keeping an eye out for possible competitors.

I'm going to email The Panda City to make sure, if I don't dig it within a reasonable amount of time with it, I can return it.

Yeah Painter has it's OWN issues in general. I stopped using it, at least until I get a better computer. After 8 it just got REALLY laggy for me lol. I could see someone who uses the tilt feature on their Intuos having issues in Painter on the Yiynova at the very least.

What problems do you have in Photoshop? You're the only person I've talked to so far that is using it the way I would, that is to Paint and not like...do fine lineart or something. I realize it has some jitter if you go smaller than like, a 5px brush or something.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jontorresart In reply to daPatches [2012-08-01 03:40:48 +0000 UTC]

There is jitter and sometimes when painting it randomly paints a straight line to the right of the screen that I didn't intend to paint. It's easy to undo of course. I haven't really looked into what would cause it.
