I guess its just because I've used mspaint a lot! and don't always do the art in normal order (like u kno sketch/ then lines/ then color/ then shading/) often I just start with the sketch and then do shading before colors or lines or vice versa. Sometimes I completely finish rendering the hands before i even start on the face.
I just like to experiment a lot! and use fun colors. I've always hated those ''art rules'' posts you often see floating around tumblr and instagram! like, fuck you!!! if I wanna shade with pure black on 50% opacity then I'm gonna fucking do that! And I'm gonna make it look great.
I like working in limited programs because when u have so many overwhelming features jumping at you it's very easy to overwork and over-polish the drawing and that can very easily lead it to looking stiff and lifeless, doing just a rough sketch and going right in. Filling colors as you go and shading over with a brush on the same layer just makes it more rough, loose and organic! But thats just my process .idk if that makes too much sense I can be pretty bad at expressing and explaining things but hope I was understandable! and also sorry for writing so much lol :3c

Hey don't apologize for writing so much! I'm really glad you did. If I'm being honest this is exactly what I needed! Art rules are such shit man, I've been defining myself by them for to long in hopes of becoming a "professional artist." in my free time. But I mean, man, who the fuck cares anymore!! I wanna just make fun lizards and cool stuff like you do. So I think that's exactly what I will do!
I never though about using a limited program, I usually use Clip Studio Paint which has like,, thirty buttons to draw a line. it's overwhelming to say the least, even though it is my most powerful program. And I've always wanted to use fun colors!! All of my characters are at least somewhat bright and funky so I'm sure I can use that to my advantage!
Also, again, something I've never though of doing: doing stuff non-linearly baybeeeeee!!! I've always really hated lineart so I'm gonna either put it at the end or just ignore it completely. also I like doing the body first so I think I'll do that as well! Also you're very good at explaining things in an understandable way, please don't sell yourself short! In this world of "here's how you do art." it's very encouraging and helpful to hear someone say "lol no." Thank you so much for your help!

They really are restrictive and often does more harm than good. esp to young artists
I get that's not the intention but god. I'm so glad I got to grow up posting my art online in an era where art resources
are easily available if you need them but never pushed down your throat the same way.
Where cringe culture weren't a widespread thing the same way it is now,
and kids learning to do art would just kinda have to... figure it out!
Instead of being told how things should look . It lead to a lot of creative problemsolving and cool art! And yeah some of it hasn't aged as well but hey!
At least people weren't as afraid to do smth out of the box and weird.
Now there's a certain expectation of how digital art ''should'' look like, and there's nothing wrong with
high res smoothly blended anime-ish semirealistic-ish super detailed renders.
They're gorgeous! But it shouldn't be the like. Expectation or perfect example of ''ideal art'' not for everyone at least!
I don't think new artists should really have like a ''art goal'' when they're starting out they should just doodle and have fun or else its super easy to get discouraged and feel like a failure.
Its also really annoying as an older artist to be told your art is wrong just because you like funky colors or draw in mspaint.
Like I know, there are other programs out there. I have clip studio. I don't need someone on like every drawing I post being like
''your art is good but it would be a lot better if you stopped using paint'' gecuyecwkj it makes me so mad its almost funny.
When I first became a teen I really started letting those /do this not that/ art posts and cringe culture get to me... I've already been down the generic
pastel anime girls route of art and I'm never going back, I'm too weak and also I don't hate myself so I'm not gonna force myself to draw stuff I don't want.
there's nothing wrong with drawing and aspiring to be a professional artist!
I think its just kinda stupid to draw /just/ for the sake of getting into art school or getting an art job, or even just freelance stuff.
Draw however you want and experiment and develop your own thing. No matter what that thing is as long as its passionate
and inspired you're gonna find an audience, even if it could be a hard sell someone's gonna like it and when they do its a thing they can only get from you!
And it doesn't even have to be extremely different from the crowd it could just be a little thing that makes it stand out!
Loads of artists I like would prob not be as interesting if it wasn't for the specific way they handle... composition or like the way they draw eyes could be really cool!
Maybe they have a nice coloring style that not a lot of people can pull off!
Yeah anatomy and studies and technical skill is important as well but there are thousands of people who can do realistic portraits and stuff.
Style is what I look for in an artist above all else (besides maybe like. basic human morals)
And please... draw those funny lissards
YEAH! Limited mediums and software are really good for creativity!
Because you have to be clever and work with the tools you get, it doesn't overcomplicate things you just... draw!
It also teaches you to stand on ur own and stop relying on fancy tools (like I heavily relied on layermodes so much its not even funny)
I also have clip studio paint! I still use it when I wanna make a really polished piece. While its been a while since last time I occasionaly do use it...
esp if its owed art if. I'm drawing /just/ for fun I usually stick to just paint or azpainter 2 if I need to use layers.
I also do have a cracked sai (don't arrest me ) but I only ever use it for when I make pics transparent.
Because clip studio hates me when it comes to exporting transparent images.
Fun colors are fucking good OK. Like so many people are too scared to play with super saturated colors or those like muddy grimy ones
and all those art posts are so obsessed with color harmony... what about contrast?
And I don't mean a soft yellow with a baby blue I mean real chaotic fun contrast!
God I remember a teacher of mine insisted I didn't know the color wheel when I'm 17 and have already learnt it
1st] in elementary school like several times
2nd] in the arts and crafts class I had 8-9th grade ( not 10th bc I had reduced school bc of mental health issues ) as well as the design class I had the same years
3rd] in the freetime art classes I took over summer last year. We ofc told her all this but she was still convinced I didn't know what tertiary colors were.
She was just wild in general and had a lot of super bad hot takes... Like I know how colors work and stuff.
I've been doing art since I was a baby my dad has a degree in art direction. I snatched all his old art supplies and school books and went though them.
Just because I make ''bad'' color choices doesn't mean I don't know what colors go together its just. That I like experimenting and making funky stuff!
Bright colors make me happy.
U realy should use more fun colors! Bright characters are so good! If u do ill look forward to seeing it!
Doing stuff nonlinearly is really good when you're not drawing with any particular plan you just
go with the flow and the drawing turns out however it wants... tbh I often don't even do lineart I just keep editing and painting over and redrawing the sketch til it is lineart.
But it warries a lot actually. I don't really have too much of a set way to go about making my art.
I do have a comfort zone I tend to fall back on though, if u were to ask what my fave part of a drawing to do I would prob say
shading but a lot of the time I also hate doing shading uichiehuduhwj I guess it depends a lot on my mood... Same as my art process!
I again, do do art linearly sometimes esp if its something important or an image I've had in my head I wanna get down of paper.
But when I'm just drawing for drawings sake and not for the outcome I just really go to town on fucking around.
I think I probably started to do art less linearly bc of my amazing best friend karo her art inspires me a lot and it really helped me loosen up and
not be so strict about how the process of the drawing goes as long as I get it done.
Yeah the body is a lot of fun 2 draw!
I really love messing around with perspectives and proportions and stuff...

even tho I've been learning it since I was 6 years old I still find tht sometimes my vocabulary can be a bit restrictive .
I also have really bad memory so ill be thinking about the perfect word to describe smth but then have to change the wording just because I can't remember what it was in English .
Vice versa also happens a suspiring amount too

And I really wish cringe culture wasn’t as widespread as it is now. I’m not sure why but it’s been making me too anxious to post my animations. I super don’t want to end up in a cringe compilation with all of my super weird drawings. But ya’ know what! They can bite me! I like making art and animations! I’m gonna put my horror animations on the same channel as my carmelldansen videos! Who cares, it’s my channel! And I know exactly what you’re talking about with the highly realistic anime renders. I used to be all about that, up until I got out of the hospital and realized “hey I don’t like art like this, really at all.” I still enjoy more anime like proportions and eyes, but other than that i’m just gonna toss it all in the garbage. And people actually?? Say that to you??? What’s wrong with them! Your use of paint creates a super interesting affect that I don’t see often and really admire! I’ve never been super into art school, but I was into professionalism for a whole. Up until I had a similar experience with an art teacher that you did and I was like “fuck this man I’m gonna paint grapefruits.” She made us paint like ??? 5 different chairs?? And do still life fruit?? It was the fuckin’ worst. At this point in my life, people can look at my art or not it’s ok! I just wanna keep drawing weird stuff and sometimes horror and they can look at it if they want, but I don’t really require it anymore. Obviously I’m still going to thank them for watching me, (thank you for watching me by the way, my art is gonna go off the rails crazy soon.) and reply to comments. But I’m not going to actively look for them.
I think I’m gonna try a simple program for my next piece, or like limit myself to 4-5 tools in clip studio! That way I can practice limits! I’m so used to having a million tools so I might be kinda reliant on them. Also I have cracked sai too no judgement here. It’s stupid how it’s only for windows. That’s the worst.
I’m getting more comfortable with messing around with fun colors! I did have a brief shot to my confidence though when someone I was doing a sushi dog design for said it was “too bright” for them. Which is absolutely ok! They where the commissioner! But I did, maybe, totally, cancel their commission. Honestly I hate commissions. I don’t even really know why I took that one. Also who the hell asks a student if they don’t know the color wheel? What kind of backwards petty bitch bullshit is that?? You’re using the color wheel in an abstract way which honestly makes art look amazing! Your art teacher is a bitch.
Also I pretty much never draw with a plan? Especially since I stopped doing requests/commissions. Now I just go and make stuff. I’ve also never considered painting over the sketch! I’ve been having a super hard time doing lineart so I *cough* skip it *cough* but that sounds like a good work around! Also your friend Karo has such good art!! I watch them now their stuff is just,, so funky.
