Light/Waves Project
How does a kaleidoscope work?
A Kaleidoscope works by light going through the tube and bouncing off of the mirrors set up in the kaleidoscope. The pieces of colored glass or plastic is set in it and the images bounce of the mirrors creating four to eight images, depending on how you set the triangles. You use 3 pieces of rectangular blown glass/mirrors (which would be Plane type of mirror) and you set them in a triangle and put them inside of a cylinder shaped object. Depending on how you set the angle of the glass can determine how many images you see: if you set it at 45 degrees it will give you eight images, six images at 60 degrees, and 4 images at 90 degrees. You seal both sides of the cylinder/tube but one side has to be clear and that is called the chamber. The other side has to have a little hole in it for you to be able to see the images in the kaleidoscope. The light goes through the chamber and bounces off of the three mirrors. The reflections bounce off one another as the light goes through the tube. When you look through the tube, the eye sees bouncing reflections, creating patters. As it rotates the objects shift and the reflection changes, making new patterns. That is how a Kaleidoscope works.
To show how a kaleidoscope works I will build my own kaleidoscope. I will glue three pieces of glass and put them into the shape of a triangle. I need to be able to open the triangle and make sure the pieces of glass are not glued because I will have to open it up again. I will glue them to the cylinder shape (a cardboard paper towel roll) and making sure I will still be able to open the kaleidoscope. I will put a clear plastic piece on the end and on the other end, close it up but put a hole in it so I can see the images. I still have to make sure I can remove both of the closed up sides. I will put pieces of plastic in it and move it around. To be able to see how the kaleidoscope works I need to take it apart but still be able to put it back together. On the side that is clear (the chamber) I will have a removable cap for it so that way when you put it on you won’t see anything happening helping show you that you need the light to be able to see how a kaleidoscope works. That is how I will show how a kaleidoscope works.
