# About me
Fort Worth born and bred. Wouldn't live anywhere else. If I ever did leave, only 1 of 2 places I'd go: Fairmont, West Virginia where my Mama (in the above picture) grew up or Port Aransas, Texas where my Mom and I used to love to pick up seashells on the shore.My name is Melissa Bates and I used to be homeless. I became homeless because my mother died. My mom went into a hospice house in Oct. 2004 and on Dec. 15, 2004, she died. When she died, I lost my entire life not just because she was my entire life but also because I lost my house, most of my belongings, my fiancΓ©e at the time cheated on me while my mom was dying so I lost that as well. I've never done any drugs and I drink on an extremely rare basis so there wasn't an addiction that led to my homelessness. Just that my mom died. After my mom died I lived with some family friends for a year and a half, attending two semesters of college at Tarrant County College South Campus during that time. Then when the summer semester came, I freaked because I'd heard all the horror stories about how the hours are long and the weeks are short and I just didn't think I could do it. Because of that decision, the husband of the couple I was living with gave me an ultimatum that I either had to find a job or move out. I tried really hard to find a job but didn't have any success. I knew that if I moved out, I'd end up homeless and I didn't want that to happen so I decided to kill myself. Well, the pills I took had an allergic reaction and I formed blisters all over my right arm, the biggest being the size of half a golf ball and forming just below my thumb. I have a bad habit of popping things and when I popped that blister, it turned into cellulitis and cellulitis led to nerve damage which I still have today. On Jun. 1, 2006, I officially became homeless and stayed at the Presbyterian Night Shelter. I lived there for about a year and a half then moved into the Union Gospel Mission where I started the Visions Unlimited Program which is a program to put homeless people into college. I lived at the UGM for about a year and a half then got into a transitional housing program and moved into my apartment on Mar. 7, 2009. My homelessness only totaled 2 years 8 months and 6 days. I graduated from TCC on May 18, 2010 and had started classes at Texas Wesleyan University the previous fall. During my time at TCC I held onto a 3.5 GPA which gave me the honor of being a member, later an officer, of the national honor society Phi Theta Kappa and one of the founding members of the English honor society, Sigma Kappa Delta. I am now a senior at TWU. I am the editor of the Campus Life page for the school newspaper, The Rambler. I love school. I've always loved school and I am extremely grateful to the Visions Unlimited Program, the Union Gospel Mission, the Workforce Commission and everyone who has helped and supported me along the way.
