Wow you do some fantastic work. Your sense of anatomy, composition, and lighting are simply amazing.
Very detailed stuff and quite beautiful.

Man, you're a professional, and your art looks like a professional. I like it. Keep up with the great work!

I know many people on deviantart are easy to please, but to be honest, I'm not one of those, but I can be a bit of a doormat sometimes and be afraid to tell someone their art looks bad, but I genuinely think your art is really well done

So, I really really like it!

Thanks! I really appreciate you taking the time to post that. I hesitate to post work here sometimes. I feel like it's open season for criticism. I rarely get anything bad, and I consider the source when I do get them.Β
It's nice to check in and hear something nice!Β

Oh, you're welcome! Your art genuinely does look like a professional.

I think the people who go out to shoot others down on DeviantArt are either misguided or trolls, Why I say misguided for the first one is because there are DA YouTubers who (in 2016) went to mediocre art and fetish art and started insulting the art and sometimes even the artist. There are still people who do that, but to a lesser extent, what I would do is treat them like internet trolls and give them no reaction and block them if you feel you need to.

And it is nice to hear something nice! (although I feel like I get too many compliments, I want constructive criticism really bad, and I only got it once...)

I've been working professionally for years. Book covers, airbrush magazine tutorials, comic covers, and commission work. It's a long road, that's for sure. Very competitive.

I always look to see if there is any validity to criticism. Sometimes there is, but most often, it's people with far less training and achievement that want to feel better about their inadequacy by taking a shot at your work publicly. Typically bully behavior.Β
I think you're right. You just ignore it, or block them.Β

Yea I have people think mine is digital as well. It's amazing the reaction I get sometimes. It's like some of the kids now a days don't think it's
possible. the thing I like is that most traditional has a unique look to it where as most of the digital work out there all looks the same.

mcalandra In reply to badass-artist [2014-06-02 14:28:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the digital work, while I do like it, has a "look" to it. You are right, the younger people grew up on the computer, so they can't figure out how we do it.Β

Us old schoolers need to take control. BTW Nice work.... I've been meaning to ask you what your medium is. It looks like airbrushed qouache.

I use airbrush acrylics right of the bottle. Mostly Comart and Holbein with an Iwata Eclipse. I use hot press illustration board for most work since it allows me to erase for details. I do use some colored pencils for details, too.Β

badass-artist In reply to mcalandra [2014-06-05 12:31:00 +0000 UTC]

Your very similar to what I do. I use Golden on hot pressed watercolor paper with an Iwata micron. Did you ever work on Tee shirts earlier in your career. I painted shirts on the Gulf beaches in the 80s - early 90s.

mcalandra In reply to badass-artist [2014-06-05 15:27:54 +0000 UTC]

Never painted tshirts. I stumbled on the airbrush sometime around 2003. Taught myself how to use it. It took a while to get my technique down, but I have found out that what I do is similar to a lot of other airbrush illustrators. It just seems to fit my style.Β

badass-artist In reply to mcalandra [2014-06-06 13:41:26 +0000 UTC]

I discovered the airbrush back in '79 when I started painting Vans of all things. Yea I'm that old. Painting shirts is where i learned my trade. I had to tighten things up when I started working commercial. I use a lot more brush work along with freehand airbrushing. Teaching yourself is good because you developed a unique style.
