Welcome to Alaska and welcome to !!! I live in the Mat-Su Valley and love to go out shooting with like minded shutterbugs. I don't get into A-town very often at all though, so if you're ever headed out this way, give a yell and maybe we can have coffee.

I would love to pick the brain for some good locations to shoot landscapes! I just moved up here for another job and am looking for a close place to get my feet wet in Alaska photography!

Well that all depends on what you like to do! Hatcher's Pass (Out here) is great if you're not into hiking, and Eagle River road, Girdwood, Portage, as well though all of these locations have trails if you ARE into hiking. There are gorgeous views everywhere you turn, it all just depends on the light, really. If transportation is limited, catch a bus to Far North Bicentennial Park along Campbell Creek [link]
Or out to Kincaid Park, Earthquake Park (Especially gorgeous after dark, if not very safe). Be sure to carry bear mace with you though, and stay alert! It seems more people are injured by bears near the "big city" than anywhere else. Learn to identify signs of a bear's cache, such as foul odor, disturbed forest debris, tufts of hair, etc. and if you notice them LEAVE the area IMMEDIATELY. - and DON'T whistle while you hike - predators mistake that for the sounds of some small game animals.
