Somehow your work was adjacent to mine in the new "More Like This" search feature on dA. I could not be more delighted than to have found your work here. Hope you continue to post new works.

Hey ArkyGurl!
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. A vertually new life. Sold the house in the burbs. Moved from the country to the city and dropped internet service in my apartment out of state. All together changed my online activity levels. Very glad to see you are seeing a bit of light in your life. Ironic that we should have started our online friendship when you mom was getting sick. It does make the remaining parts of your life more vivid and precious. Both my parents are gone and it's surprising after all this time how much I still think about them. How is school going? you should be in your last year of 5, no? Any prospects? How is life with your sweetheart. You are a very cute couple. Drop me a line. I wouldn't be offended if you took 7 or 8 weeks to answer to get even 8@)

Hey,
I've looked for you several times to chat but our timing hasn't been good. You've been off for three or so days and I've been stupid busy. We should keep trying. Watch for me in either thephotographyunion or photographers chat rooms. Or note me and we'll see if we can get our schedules to match.

Here is the original note I sent:
"Hey, you fled before I finished typing. Shouldn't waste it. Here's what I wrote.
it's nice but the frontal flash dampens the beauty for me. It's a great butterfly shot but I'm in love with lush light. I always pick a shot with rich light over everything else. I'm simple that way. You have lots of potential.
See you in chat!
Mark "
I did like the shot for it's unique moment as well as the portrayal of an object of natures beauty but there is a subtle line that runs between a beautiful photograph and a beautiful thing contained in the photograph.

I've been spending quite a bit of time in your gallery. Quite a compliment from me of the short attention span. How much of the effect in your photos is Photoshop and how much of it is camera manipulation, like filters or special effects lenses(read shot glasses, Agfa loupes, drycleaning bags etc.) I love the slightly melted effect in so many of your shots. And the Kallitype filter. Is that something of your own making or a purchased plug-in? Don't get me wrong here. I love your work. Even if it's 98% Photoshop. It would just mean that I won't be trying it. I'm not much of a Photoshop person. I have to use it everyday commercially and make accurate sharp images for clients. I am drawn to the deconstructed in photo. It's where I find art with which I have the most affinity. Thanks! Your work is a pleasure.

DuncanRitchie In reply to mrockwood [2010-01-29 23:56:54 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely no Photoshop. That's an easy one to answer.
Now there's a mini epic story attached to how I came to produce this "effect" in my work. I'll tell it to you in couple of messages so here's... Part I.
I use a Hasselblad 503, I purchased this wonder just last year. I had to sell some small children to a dodgy Thai guy but hey it's been well worth it! So I've purchased said camera and experimented and sussed it out to the cows came home. Then I've headed off to Tokyo for three months Hasselblad in tow with the intention of shooting everything that did and did not walk. Everything started off very well until I set out one day from my apartment, I slipped on the stairs leading downstairs and dropped the case with the Hassey in it. It only rolled a few stairs down, no problem. I've taken it to the kitchen opened the case had a real good look, everything was fine. Wandered down to the Sumida River not far from where I lived. Put the camera together, popped up the viewfinder and saw light, not river. The film case had become separated. Now I don't leave the film case attached when it's in its case that's a big no no! But the modular attachment in the camera itself had cracked. The film case couldn't attach properly. It was like losing a new born child. After getting over myself I went home photographed the damage with my iPhone and headed off to Akihabara, Tokyo's electronic capital to see if anyone could help me out. Now my Japanese is OK but Hasselblad was like a foreign word to everyone I spoke to. I couldn't find anyone all weekend to help me out. So I resorted to trying to fix it myself (with cloth tape). The case just wouldn't sit flat but I did stop the light leakage. So it got stuck in the corner, I went to the 7 Eleven and got beer, Kirin Draught to be precise. This is now my favorite beer because after a few the beer and I had an epiphany!

Man, I love the story so far. Especially the no Photoshop part. I'm very old school. I shot film for half of my pro career and for 13 years before that. Can't wait to hear how your story ends!

DuncanRitchie In reply to DuncanRitchie [2010-01-30 02:34:40 +0000 UTC]
Right... Part II.
Beer and Epiphany.
There was nothing wrong with the viewfinder or the lens or the two tripods I had. I have two short tripods, one for the Hasselblad and one for my iPhone. Why not shoot TTV? I've been doing it ever since, the iPhone in essence acts as a digital viewfinder. Only 3 megapixels mind you, but when shooting 6x6 that's plenty of resolution.
I use two filters attached to the Hasseys lens, one green virage, one custom scratched. Both those effects are fairly obvious when you look at some pieces. With the iPhone I shoot using a Tilt Shift application, It's very simple, has radial and lineal focus, saturation, brightness, contrast and vignetting. There's another application called PhotoFX that I use in moderation if a piece isn't quite right. It's very flexible with almost infinite adjustment. Besides that it's good old knowledge regarding lighting etc etc. The lens is Carl Zeiss with a very short depth of field. I use a plain Matte Viewfinder which accounts for that melted feel. That's inherent in most TTV shooting I've noticed.
I think that's about it, well it's the basics anyway

Thanks for steering me to my own profile page. Very informative but still have questions. I'm shooting with the iPhone as well. Have a show up of photos from the phone. They are my salvation. I'm using the ShakeIt app to get the good old SX-70 color and feel as well as the square we all so love. I'll check out the Apps you mentioned. Thanks for taking the time to answer. As I said, the beer is on me.
