my pleasure
your work is awesome. i like drawing and painting but i never got around to properly ink my work. these past couple of weeks i have been working on a couple of drawings and i said no guts no glory and the hell with it if it's ruined and started to apply heavy block shadows. hopefully i will complete a couple by the end of the week and post them. i would really appreciate it if you could give me some pointers. that is of course if it isn't much trouble, i'm sure you're pretty busy with deadlines and all.

hope to see more of your posts soon
take care

Learning where to apply shadows is a good start, the next step is practicing texturing to help bring the shading out with things like feathering, hatching, cross hatching, etc. You can also use different things to create textures in the inks like cotton, toothbrushes (I use them for star spatter and blood splatter, its all in the angles), toothpicks, etc.

thank you very much for the pointers and taking the time answer i tried using flat edge brushes for grey tones but i don't think it worked out too well. you're right though, i guess deciding where the shadows will be and how dark it should appear (fully dark, hatched or feathered) would be a better way to start. i am getting more comfortable with blocks of dark areas i guess the rest would come with practice.

toothbrush for spatter work is an excellent idea. thank you very much, i could not think of that. i think i will give that a try tonight, just to get a feel for it. seems a bit tricky getting the right angles for the desired spatter.

again thank you very much for taking the time to answer i really appreciate it.

No problem Well the brushes we use for inking are points, and the hatching and feathering can either be done with them or with a crowquill. So I don't know how well a flat edge would work

nejdetarikoglu In reply to mechangel2002 [2009-08-25 07:09:25 +0000 UTC]

the round point brushes carry the ink really well and they have a variety of flexible uses they curve very easily and carry the ink with great consistency so doing long curved lines are relatively easy with a brush also they can go from thin to thick at the slightest pressure so they are great for line works and feathering. i didn't know how the flatbrush would also look but i find that if you use away most of the ink, you get hair thin evenly spaced cluster of lines. which gives the paper a sepia grey tone. i used it to add some really dark shadows. the more you brush the darker it gets. it's not conventional and takes a lot of trial and error just to get the right consistency and usually ends up as a pain in the neck (really i kept bending my neck and had several cramps ) only good that came out of it was i got a great looking bakground on one of my drawings
