Favorite visual artist: I love German Expressionism from the early 20th century. Max Beckmann is probably my favorite, but also Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Lyonel Feininger, Franz Marc, early Kandinsky (ok, he's not German). I like woodcuts, especially Käthe Kollwitz.Favorite movies: His Gal Friday (Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell); the new-ish Jane Eyre (with Mia Wasikowska); The Avengers!
Favorite TV shows: Don't really watch TV, but love the new Sherlock series on BBC (stream through Amazon), and I've been sucked into Downton Abbey; it's addictive.
Favorite bands / musical artists: Coltrane, Monk, Miles, Mingus. New things I've been listening to: Courtney Pine, Regina Carter. I'm also a bit obsessed with Fiona Apple. And I've been listening to Dimitry Shostakovich lately (violin concerto and string quartets).
Favorite books: Moby Dick; Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky in general), pretty much anything by Kafka, and Shakespeare tragedies

I am a software engineer who, after 30 years of focusing on marriage, kids, career, and other pursuits, has decided to try and resurrect the drawing skills that have languished since college. I started with digital art, but found that I spent too much time in front of the computer. Thanks for the welcome! And I'm glad my work doesn't come across as stodgy..."classical" pen and ink (not graphic novel-type stuff) can tend to be a bit boring, but I love the style. The challenge is to inject some life into it.

As for your artistic flow: I've say you succeeded at giving it a realistic dynamism. I know you mentioned Loomis as one of your inspirations, but it also reminds me (in a good way) of Burne Hogarth's non-comic book work - such as his "Dynamic" art tutorials - except yours has less over-dramatized diagonals for their own sake, and more Hellenistic attention to movement.

Wow, that's a nice compliment. Hogarth is great, but I've never really considered him as one of my big influences. To me, Dore' is huge, and then Franklin Booth, Joseph Clement Coll, Charles Dana Gibson, etc.
Your profile lists Firefly as one of your favorite TV shows. I like checking out that part of people's profiles...it turns up some interesting stuff. maybe I'm just nosy...

Haha! Gotcha. Yeah, the writing of that show was amazing, and the actors pulled it off wonderfully. It's a shame it crashed and burned - something I still say had more to do with executive choices about airing the show than about the series itself.

Me too. Drawing in architecture school, then marriage, kids, job,, etc., were more urgent, but now there's time. I tried digital also, but like to feel the pencil, pen, brush in my hand. I want to eventually get back to water colors, but am dealing with pencil for starters. You're way ahead of me in getting back to artwork.

Ha, many! I used to keep them in these upright pen holders on the side of my drawing table, so that the nibs stuck up in the air. But it was deadly when I reached across to my desk. Scratched hand, ruined nib, and the pen goes flying across the room... Now I keep the brushes there...and the pens are in holders that are right next to the wall. Much safer...!

since I've stumbled upon your artwork multiple times in very different ways now and it always captured my eye, I've just added you to my watch list.
All I can do at this point (because I have no valuable critique or tips to offer) is to congratulate you on your very accomplished portfolio. everything seems very tidy and polished, yet intuitive and effortless - in short, everything I was hoping to be able to do some(far-away)day.
