# About me

I tend to experiment with colours and work with dark tones in my photography, to get an expressive or impressionistic look. That way I can express emotions and feelings better about my enviroment i live in and visit.

For my personal arts i prefer working with film, small or mediumformat, b&w or colour. I don't work in the traditional dark room any more, so I scan all my work and process it digitally.

Current Residence: Gothenburg
Favourite genre of music: soundtracks

Thank you very much, glad to hear!

I saw that you work with large format film, it must be very fun right? I hope to change from medium to large format sometime, but it's too expensive for me right now.

Yeah I find large format a lot more "hands on" what with negative carriers and the development process and all. If you're patient you can get a 4x5 field camera with lens for $400 or less. Negative carriers usually run $10 a piece and hold 2 sheets at a time. I finally got a Jobo tank for daylight rotary processing of the negatives for $75 and said good bye to tray processing.

The consumables cost is lower, I find, than roll film. It's because it takes so long to set up for the shot that I don't even fire the shutter if it's not a primo image. My large format pictures are usually better than my digital/roll film pictures because the time investment required from shot to print means I make it count.

I find it true that the longer time you give an image it usually gives better results, more pearls per shoot than with 35-films or digital. But the film is pretty expensive, right? Like 10 sheets for around 15 dollars, or more? In any case I don't know about b&w sheet-costs, but colour is too expensive since you usually have to send it for development.

Talking about trays and dark-room, I'm planning on printing my images in the darkroom rather than digital, I fell that I've lost a big chunk of that "original feel" of a handmade print.
Anyhow one day I'm gonna get field camera.

I picked up a sealed box 100 sheet box of FP4+ that expired in 2007 for $25. The guy who sold it claimed it was kept in the freezer the entire time he had it and after I developed a few shots I believed him.

I do my own C41 colour now, too. It's not hard and ends up costing about $1.25 per sheet to process (plus film cost). No fancy equipment, just a daylight drum and a cheap uniroller.

Lugging the equipment (camera, holders, etc) is more detrimental than the cost, I think. I'm now following a strategy of "scoping out" a location with a medium format camera, then revisiting the site with a large format if it's worth the extra time investment.

I've only been doing my printing in the darkroom. The film costs of 4x5 are instantly offset by the costs to print b&w in the darkroom compared to digitally. Plus you need a $40,000 back to equal the sharpness .

Ah, but then it comes down to luck of finding the stuff at a bargain.

I read about the jobo-tank, is the one you have the automatic thingy? I'm living in sweden and i've never heard of those things here but I'm gonna look for them for sure, if I understood them they can use both bw and colour chemicals, and in daylight too. That would be just... awesome to have, thinking on the money and time-save. If i could get one like that I would save much money!

I used to make handmade copies some years ago and was quite good at it. But then i turned a bit digital, so I still scan my negs, and they turn out really good when printing digital too. But like I said they lack the soul of being unique copies, which always turns out different from the last. *sigh* Nostalgia...

I know what you mean by having trouble finding stuff at bargain prices. I've been looking for 16x20 and 11x14 trays for almost 2 months now and I can't see myself paying $30 per tray for new ones. I have three one-hundred pack boxes of 8x10 paper that were given to me by friends which I'm about halfway through. That's been very helpful.

There are regular and "expert" jobo drums, which are normally used with Jobo machines (CPP-2, CPE-2 are a couple of the machines).

I have a regular drum that I picked up used for $75 with a 4x5 reel that accepts 6 sheets at a time. The same 2551 drum can hold 6 reels of 35mm with 1.25L of fluid if I decide to get the 35mm reels. I originally got it for B&W processing of 4x5 without needing trays. It gets to -24C many weeks during the winter, here, and my darkroom's located in an off building with a small propane heater which has to be turned off when handling film & paper (emits too much light). Having a daylight tank I could use in the house's washroom has been a godsend!

I don't have the fancy film processing machine. The jobo machines have tempered water baths that maintain the processing temperature. They're very pricey in north america, compared to europe. About double the price on the used market, for some reason, so I've never bothered with one. It's on my "near term to buy" list when I'll have to spend $500 on one. I heard they sometimes go for $80 in europe! I only have the 2551 drum and a "uniroller" rotating base.

This video demonstrates C41 colour negative processing: [link] . It's REALLY that easy (almost easier than b&w)! I've tried the Tetenal kit with Fuji 160S and Portra 400NC and both have scanned great. E6 processing requires a good tempered bath, though, so it's not as easy.
