yeah i forgot about dA...I haven't really been drawing or photographying since uni started...two years ago. Architecture has taken over my life, but I'm slowly getting back into it so I hope I start posting things up soon!

thats awesome. I just did year 12 last year and I did costume design for the Japanese play on the list XD as u can probably tell from my pictures i postedin my gallery XD i got a mid band 5 for drama

it has pictures from productions of the play and i found lots of useful information that helped me a lot. They have 2 stores one in Melbourne n one in sydeny... when i was looking for it they didnt have it in sydney but they did in melbourne so they just shipped it up to the sydney store.

I had a lot of trouble finding it all as well XD
I found a lot of ideas from looking at pictures and readin the plays because they tend to describe what the characters were wearing very well.
here are some websites that might help but like i said i did have a lot of problems researching the costume designs myself
the book: Kabuki - Five Classic Plays by James R. Brandon helped me a little, it has like it says 5 plays in it and the introduction has a lot about the style of Kabuki including costumes.

like i said it is very hard XD. what i can tell you is that the costumes were very important in showing who the character was, their status, role, traits or age etc. which colour n textile achieved. The makeup was also important, a style that was easily recognizable. it had a white base and the lines of black n other colours enhanced/exaggerates facial lines, the coloured lines were an expression of the characters traits. The costumes are usually very flashy and colourful. Blue and Black symbolise villainy, jealousy, negative traits. Purple usually indicates ties of love, nobility. Red symbolise passion, heroism, righteousness, positive traits. White, truth, sacred, mourning, marriage. yellow is treachery, cowardice, deceit, optimism, joy. brown is earth, endurance, simplicity. green was supernatural.
The costumes usually reflect the society at the time it was made so it differs in little bits between plays because of the social and political issues at the time as well as the fashion. they are full of subtlety, illusion and hidden meaning.
in some plays during different scenes their were costume changes, colour n style would change but each character ususally had the same pattern on each of their costumes whic the audience could identify with.
i hope i did help a little bit but it is a hard topic to research... but like i said reading a kabuki play or looking at kabuki pictures will give u a somewhat good idea on what to do. =]
