I'm loving your new work! I showed my friends who are all into art and they were stunned. How'd the meeting about your work go that you went to a few weeks ago?

I think it went okay, I've submitted my stuff on a USB stick and unless they think it sucks it should be on their website by Halloween! Just a matter of keeping fingers crossed now I think!!!

Media and Communications: there's a big illustration element in it though, which is what I have my heart set on at the moment! But lots of theory and political history just for a back up in case I fall on my arse in the practical modules.
Have you been looking around unis yourself? where are you off to/thinking of going to?

yeah well i'm taking graphic design at the mo and its a bit shit but i'm way more into the illustration side of things.
i wanna go to the norwich school of art and design to take illustration but i still have a year left of college.
whereabouts are you going?

NSAD looks pretty good! Beautiful building... I'm sure you'll do really well there if your gallery is anything to go by! I'll be at the UOL, pretentiousness ahoy.
Your term should be starting about now right? Good luck in your final year!!! What is graphic design like? I get the impression it's like commercial illustration but a lot more rigid and practical? Or that you spend way too much time looking at typography, what makes it shit?

lewbutcher In reply to probablynot [2008-09-15 21:19:18 +0000 UTC]
haha i'm quite dissapointed by my own gallery, i think its a bit weak, all traditional and no digital.
Havent london got one of the best design schools though.
yeah i started two weeks ago! thanks. umm well its very commercial and it involves alot of corperate identity work and design backs and layouts and stuff. Its alot more rigid yeah, the briefs are alot tighter which i have trouble with.
i hate typography, i really cant stand it. my tutors are all fine artists and graphic designers so our oppinions conflict alot about my work. Its the lack of freedom in the briefs which get me, thats why i much prefer illustration.
when do you start?

probablynot In reply to lewbutcher [2008-09-15 23:00:43 +0000 UTC]
Ah but you see that's very impressive, it's a commendable talent to be able to work to a brief and communicate ideas so fluently with images, must involve a lot of lateral thinking I bet! It sounds challenging, it's cool; a real application of art. Illustration does this as well but not so explicitly, you have to be artistically talented AND damn smart in the way you use it - must be really satisfying to complete a brief well...
I really regret not taking graphic design, I carried on with fine art and only discovered the joys of digital art and modern styles like literally 6 months ago, I've been missing out!
(and I start in a week!)

lewbutcher In reply to probablynot [2008-09-16 10:35:06 +0000 UTC]
yeah i suppose and it is nice when you complete a brief that you have struggled with but you manage to nail it. My style really doesnt suit the graphics side of things plus i dont like the commercial side of it.
yeah, i really should start doing some digital work but its just getting round to it. how the hell have you been doing digital work for sixth months and your work is as good as it is?!
good luck! did your A-levels go well?

probablynot In reply to lewbutcher [2008-09-16 18:14:30 +0000 UTC]
I dunno, there's something quite nice and natural about your work, the imagery and characters all remind me of the appeal of a good ol' fashioned doodle, if you put them on the computer they wouldn't seem as organic... if that makes sense?
With people like
you can see grains and fibres of paper (although sometimes it's a digital effect) and it completely changes the whole feel of it to look at, more empathy...
But using the graphics tablet is pretty much the same as using a pencil, you get used to it so quickly so you can immediately transfer all your knowledge to a digital medium pretty easily. It only takes a couple of weeks to get used to because the marks you make with the pen appear in a different place, not on the same surface you're drawing on!, that's the only real hurdle - pretty much 90% of any improvement I've made in six months is just getting to know what photoshop is capable of!
aegh sorry about the ramble!

i've always wanted to use a graphics tablet! never really had the opportunity!
those two guys are awesome! i like the toast guy better.
ahh thats ok, its nice to actually talk about art for once, no-one in my class picked it because they enjoy art.
i remember your work being quite impressive in high school aswell but i really liek that big pink lady thing you did.

Ahhh, this website made me want one, you can get a decent small little basic Wacom tablet for about £40 these days if you ever fancy getting one it's a nice little investment!
No one really talks about art with me either, most of my mates took sciencey subjects, and the ones that took art didn't really seem to have a burning urge to talk about it - I think we were all sick to death of the exam topic we had been doing for the whole year towards the end of it! I've never seen anyone's casual art - it just seems like an academic subject to them and that's all.
It's a shame though, I bet we'd both meet like-minded people at NSAD/UOL though!
Do you ever reckon there is a little part of you in the back of your mind that kinda likes it that way? Because it's private, once everyone's work is all out in the open and everyone can criticise it and be unimpressed with it, it becomes less special.
haha!

yeah i was looking at some on amazon and these is some wacom bamboos on there but they have gotten mixed reviews.
yeah alot of my friends took academic subjects so talking about to them is quite hard. yeah, only a year left to go though, i'm not really looking forward to do the whole UCAS process though.
haha yeah deffinately, i would quite like for my drawings to just stay in my notepad and not be judged by the big wide world, but then i suppose you get to the stage where the whole world is judging it then you know your pretty special at art!
