# About me
I’ve always loved to create, from the moment I could hold a crayon, I would disappear into my imagination for hours at a time and make unique worlds for myself to play in. I originally went to college at the University of Northern Iowa to become an art teacher, but I decided it was a poor fit for me. I love kids, don’t get me wrong, but I wanted more time to focus on creating my original pieces. I ended up majoring in Fine Arts, with an emphasis in painting and had to leave school very close to graduating to make money to support myself and my husband.Art is not a practical career, but its essential to that side of ourselves that dares to dream. I had my drive beaten out of by the economic depression that occurred right when I was finishing up my education. I thought, this career is not practical, we can’t pay our bills on our dreams. So I tried to shut away that side of myself and focus on other endeavors that were practical.
I also have always struggled with anxiety, depression, and now I also found out that I have a chronic illness called fibromyalgia. I went through a time period where I didn’t want to create anything anymore, my brain and body were so tired just trying to survive that I had little energy left over for my imaginary worlds. Now, I have found medication and a lifestyle adjustment that works for me, and am inspired to get back into my studio again. I wanted to be open about how mental illness and chronic illness effects artists; in some ways, the adversity heightens my creativity and pain can be created into something beautiful that others can relate to. I don’t think the image of the “long suffering artist” has to be my story, however. I encourage everyone to practice self care first, only then will you be in the right mind set to create something meaningful.
I chose to title my studio, Quioxtic, because I think what I do may be seen as impratical or idealistic by many, but isn’t that what we need in our society that allows us so little to play, to go back to that imaginary world of our childhood? A place where we felt we could be anyone we wanted to be? Who’s to say we can’t?
