It's going well. Not much; work. Then just chilling with friends and going to the beach and taking pictures. You?

That sounds nice though! I'm glad you're doing well and your summer is doing well too! Mine has been pretty laid back so far, which I appreciate. It was a busy first half of the year.

simplysamwise In reply to Baghindi-Photography [2011-10-17 03:01:40 +0000 UTC]

So hey. Short disclaimer: you asked, I'll tell you the truth. I don't want to burst your bubble, but I have very high standards for photography. Even in my own photography, I myself rarely ever meet those standards. I say all of this to inform and to tell you what I think, not to hurt your feelings. Art is subjective, but we can all improve, yes?

So I took a quick look (sort of in the middle of ten different things right now) and I immediately noticed three things: the camera, the edits, and the focus.

A) The camera.
Either your settings are set wrong, or your camera's quality is not the best. Sadly, this can't be helped in a lot of cases: lack of money, etc. But I thought I'd point out that the quality of the photos suffer terribly from the camera.

This brings me to B.) The edits.
This comes from someone with the same problem: you utterly over-edit your photos. Less is more. Sadly, subtlety is a dying art. I look at some of your photos, and I see that the edits have actually damaged the quality of the photos: they're huge bursts of grainy color and such. And if they're not over-edited, they're kind of cliche. Focal black and white and focal zoom are really difficult to use and still have your images look elegant and professional. For me, personally: never ever blur the entirety your photo. It's hard enough to make things look in focus when you're not intentionally blurring it. I myself over-edit a lot of the time, so it's not just you. The idea that "less is more" really has to be the key for people like us. If using picnik, (though I rarely do now; if available, Photoshop is vastly superior) I never use an effect at full-blast. The purpose of editing photos should be to enhance the photo's natural beauty/worth/whatever. Some people will argue that, and that's fine--everyone is allowed their opinion. I just don't like photos that look poorly edited--it's too distracting from that actual photography.

C.) The focus (and background and composition).
I'm kind of shocked at some of the photos you've submitted--just how out of focus they are. Again, I believe a lot of this can be the camera, but it's your job to make sure that the photos you post really are spectacular. The subject must be in focus. This should always be the case--in my opinion, at least--no exceptions. I think you could benefit paying some more attention to the background--chain link fences and houses don't make a great flower shot, y'know? Composition: try not to cut off the tops or sides or bottoms of your subject--it's sort of a photography rule. And I know rules are made to be broken, but unless it's done in an artistic, intentional-looking way, it just looks unprofessional.

Another note: I'm not a huge fan of people posting photography that isn't theirs. I understand that you have permission to edit and post these pictures, but the fact is that some people won't read things like artist notes, and therefore some people will end up thinking that some of this photography is yours, and it's just a bit too close to taking credit for art that isn't yours, in my opinion.

To shorten and wrap it all up: please don't be too discouraged. Just because I'm not a huge fan doesn't mean that there's not people out there who like your work. I think you're a lot better than I was when I started, but I think your camera is killing you. If you're not too serious about photography, I don't think a new camera is needed, but if you are passionate about this, you need equipment to suit your level of passion. You also need to look at some photographers around dA, see if you can pick up some tips about subtle, elegant edits. Also: Photoshop is a enormously helpful asset. I'd look into obtaining it, because picnik.com can really murder photo quality.

Thank you soooo much!!, i think this is what i needed , this is very helpful and i am really greatful that your took the time to write this , and my camera is very LOW quality, you can tell , its very ond, because i jsut started and i am still in high school, so i dont even work and i got no money in my hand, but i know i want to be a photographer and when i get a job, i will buy a really good camera and improve my skills, thank you

I think if you focus on those three (technically five, but... xD) points, you can improve in leaps and bounds. Even if your camera isn't the greatest, the practice will still help a lot. And maybe you have a friend who has an SLR you can borrow, or maybe your parents will help finance. Good luck.
