ask Melissa at school. Just make an icon that fits the size requirements, save for web go to your dA page, click more>edit settings>identity>change avatar etc
I am pretty sure there is an FAQ on this.

umm okay, well open photoshop and make a new image that is 50 x 50 pixels (I think) or something larger but make sure it can scale down to that size. Then put whatever you want on it and save it for web. Then follow my instructions on my previous comment.
