To answer your question, which windows program would I recommend to learn besides 3dsmax... I would have to say stick with max if you are already comfortable with it's tools. It's a very fine program with tremendously awesome potential. Making cool 3d images comes down to your choice of subject and execution of modelling lighting and texturing.

My advice would to set time aside to step through some tutorials that interest you and immediately afterwards apply what you've learned to a personal project or experiment so the knowledge gets stuck in your head. This way your skills will steadily grow and you will never stop learning. You will only get better and better.

To answer your question, no, I don't use 3dsmax for my modelling. I use Cinema 4d xl. I wanted to go with max from the start but they have yet to release a Mac version.
