I'd prefer to see more wild orcas myself. I'm hoping to get good photos of transients come mid April when they come to hunt grey whale calves.

Oh yes, the downside to Transients Orcas, their brutal hunting ways. I couldn't watch that happen, I never will, I'd cry. XD I like the resident Orca a little more, they're more friendly, I had a male come up to say hi to me off the bow of the boat, not to mention they come up to kayaks to check 'em out.

I'd actually like to see them hunt, one of the whale watch companies I use is the one that got the hunting scene for Blue Planet. They've also seen them hunt elephant seals and sea lions, and one of the deck hands said they saw them playing with grey whale blubber. when I saw them they were feeding but you couldn't really see much. We usually only get transients and offshores down here, but one southern resident pod showed up a few years ago, i think it was L pod. They have signs on the pier now asking people to take pictures of any orca they see, I think they're trying to determine if residents are coming down here regularly. I guess salmon stocks are depleted for some reason in WA (probably salmon farming operations).

It's the brutality I don't appreciate, watching them hunt is amazing, especially watching Mel during his beach hunting. When that calf came up WHEEZING for air in that attack, I lost it. I couldn't see any infant drown like that. Even if they only eat the lower jaw and tongue (For all that trauma and suffering the infant goes through, it seems like a waste) the corpse sinks and goes to the deep sea feeders or on shore to be eaten by land dwellers. I've seen mother Greys send Orcas flying and even injure some but that doesn't stave me, I worry more for the infant, if the Orcas go without, it doesn't nessecarily suck to be them since they have plenty to eat, they even eat Dolphins. One of the most memorable bits I've seen was a Humpback mother being chased, what she did was something never recorded before. She held her calf to her belly by guiding him with her fins, and rolled on her side, swimming in a circle with her back facing the Orca who got frustrated and bit her back several times to try and make her flinch. It went on for 2 and half hours of shifting and the Orcas looking for an opening. Not only did the Orca give up, but the mother's sacrifice of several bites and even the loss of the tip of her fluke granted the calf much rest and they fled. She was a seasoned mother, and lost a calf to the Orca before. The researchers were confident she devised this new way to protect her baby from past experiences on her own, which I hope she'll pass on to other mothers. One of the researchers called it a "Love Ring", a mother's love in other words. Both Whale and Dolphin have amazing intelligence.

We get them pretty much every summer in Monterey Bay, I still can't believe how close those two got, that was just awe inspiring to watch. I think it's awesome you get to get work with the humpbacks, the three friendlies that investigated the boat I was on made for a another great experience, I'd love to make my living researching them.

I really enjoyed my time with them ^-^ I had 5 months... was verey lucky. I'm studying seals and sealions now, but hopefully one day I'll get to do humpback work again, if not I have lots of friends I can go 'visit' to go out and see the humpback with!
I'd love to see blue whales, the biggest whales I've seen where fin whales, one surfaced right next to our boat once and it was amazing so I can't imagine what a blue must be like...

You read about how big they are but seeing one in real life is amazing. When they dive it's like watching a train go by, it seems to go on forever. If you ever get the chance to visit or work in Monterey Bay in the summer there's a pretty good chance of seeing one. I guess they're common in the St Lawerence Seaway too, but I can't vouch for that since I've never gone whale watching there.

Wow! I love all your prehistoric/rare animal art. You have a fantastic sense of style and I'm glad to see that someone is drawing creatures that don't generally get a lot of recognition. Have you ever seen those Schouten/Flannery extinct/astonishing animal books? I only ask because that's the only other place I've ever even seen a lot of these critters.

Nice work!
