# About me

"Too long - said my father - have we lived under the terror of the matchless perfection of the Demiurge. Too long has the perfection of his handiwork paralysed our own creativity. We have no desire to compete with him. Our ambition is not to rival him. We merely want to be creators in our own, lower sphere. We crave creativity for ourselves. We crave the joy of creation. We crave, in a word, Demiurgy."

- Bruno Schulz, "A Treatise on Mannequins or The Next Book of Genesis"

Favourite genre of music: I occasionally listen to all kinds of music, but more extreme cases of metal are still my favorite. Also, I grew very fond of "aggrotech" kind of music (differently called by different people).
Operating System: Win7 4ever!

I'm replying here since my forum topic about Blender compared to Maya is closed.    Thanks for your time and information in reply, much appreciated.    I took quite a while to get back in return reply here since the only way for me to get online is at a library, and that is at best once a week.

You're most welcome! Should you have any more questions regarding 3D graphics, I'll try my best to answer.

That's too bad if you don't have your own Internet connection. From experience I can tell it's vital for learning digital art. I was no good at 3D until I got a connection at home and started making use of the enormous wealth of information available online.

Especially, the tutorials with hands-on approach, describing in detail how to do things, were what helped me the most.

Hello, birdie! Thanks for appreciation. I can see that you've got interesting stuff as well.

Did you manage to find solution to that problem? In case of any issues with Blender, you can freely turn to me for advice, and maybe I'll figure something out.

Raikita In reply to xaotherion [2013-05-23 21:52:14 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I always love seeing great Blender artists here. <333

Ahh no I couldn't find the solution unfortunately. >: When rendering hair with child simplification, Blender always always always crashes which is horrible since I'm also doing furries. D: Um, did you ever come across that problem?

(I'm using Blender 2.67 btw)

xaotherion In reply to Raikita [2013-05-24 08:21:36 +0000 UTC]

Guess I need more data. Are you trying to use Cycles rendering engine, or standard Blender Internal render? What is your operating system, is it 32 or 64 bit? What kind of processor does your computer have, and even more importantly, how much RAM memory?

It's very important, and I learned it the hard way. Trying to render this picture with large amount of fur in full resolution [link] , I had crash after crash. Nothing seemed to help. In despair, I changed the operating system... and it solved the problem! You see, back then I was using plain old 32-bit Win XP. Under an assumption that being old, it won't gobble up much of the processing power, leaving it for rendering. It turned out that I was completely wrong. After installing 64-bit Win7 (which I got free via MSDN student's program ) the problem was gone, no more crashes! What's more, it turned out that the 64-bit software squeezes so much more processing power from the CPU, that the rendering is one-third quicker under Win7!

But I still had some crashes with child simplification too, even using 64-bit stuff. So I'm avoiding the child simplification since a long time. For now, I'd suggest turning the simplification off and reducing the hair amount directly.

All in all, seems like not many artists are using the hair simulation. This area is then less tested than others, and there are probably many bugs lingering. Anyway, tell me those specifications, and the amount of hair you were trying to use. Along with exact simplification settings that are causing the crash. I'll try to replicate the problem and if it persists, there may be a bug report in order.

Recently together with we've hunted down another bug in the particle systems, so perhaps we can do it again.

Raikita In reply to xaotherion [2013-05-24 17:57:59 +0000 UTC]

Oohh okay!

I am using Windows 7, 64-bit version. I have 16GB RAM, quad-core... does graphics card play a role? Mine is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti.

In Blender, this happened on not this model, but several others even on an earlier build (like 2.5)...
Sometimes also, it just crashes on close-ups.
For child simplification... the reference size is 1920, rate is 1, transition is 0.1.

Like right now at a close-up, only rendering the face... it has 1000 hairs, but I mirrored it so I guess 2000... and then 50 children. So this makes it crash.

What does adaptive render do? I tried reading it up but still I don't really understand it. I rerendered with the same settings but using adaptive render, and it doesn't crash! (also, it only took 32 seconds to render... durrr)

I DUNNO IT LOOKS LIKE JUST STRAND RENDER MAKES IT CRASH! *shakes you*

Anyway, thank you sooo much for your help in advance! <3333333

You got 64-bit Win7 for free? Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!! :'DDDDDDDDDDDD

xaotherion In reply to Raikita [2013-05-26 13:04:09 +0000 UTC]

Birdie, stop shaking poor old hyena, this won't make things any better!! *falls to the floor*

Whew, I might have something... Try this: in the particle buttons, Children tab, there are the various roughness settings. Set Random to zero, its Size to 0,01 (the lowest it will go), Threshold to zero. If there are more particle systems, do it for all of them. Tell me if this prevents the crashes.

In case it doesn't work, try zeroing other roughness settings. But for my Wanda model, which just wouldn't render with the simplification turned on, zeroing the Random roughness, its Size & Threshold made the problem go away!

Of course, it's not how it should be, that the roughness prevents simplification from working. If it consistently proves to happen, a bug report will be in order (cause the bug reports have to be consistent & very precise, saying 'OMG simplification can't work with roughness!' won't do ).

I'm not sure what the adaptive render is good for. It shades a bit differently (most visible on long hair) and turns the individual hairs into non-smooth broken lines. But the difference from strand render is still slight.

Yeah, operating system I got for free... but my computer is three times weaker than yours

Raikita In reply to xaotherion [2013-06-01 05:27:54 +0000 UTC]

Sorry about that. xD;;;

Ahh... sometimes it works, most times it doesn't. I guess I can't really send in a bug report, can I? D:

Also that would SUCK if I had to zero roughness because I'm using it! ;O;

BUT THANK YOU! <: And hey, even still, you still got some awesome renders going on. x333333

xaotherion In reply to Raikita [2013-06-09 13:25:14 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks as well! Guess I'm the proof that one doesn't necessarily need expensive computer to get some 3D artwork going.
And I'm especially happy that Blender is so lightweight, doesn't need lots of resources to run.

I have successfully finished my masterpiece recently, so I'll have another look into that crash issue. I'll check whatever I can and then relate the findings to Niko, he's much better 'Blender technician' than me. Hopefully, the bug can be squashed eventually.

The problem seems to be that it's a complex issue, happens mostly on complicated models. This way, it's harder to uncover one solid reason behind the bug - and this is needed to get rid of it. The Blender programmers need to be able to re-create the bug to check what's going on and how to fix it. So far, I haven't been able to re-create the bug on a non-complicated model, that could be presented to them... but I haven't checked all possibilities yet.

For now, a quick and dirty solution: if your models have lots of child particles, and in some scenes it would be good to limit their amount; and you don't want to mess with the children amount for each individual particle systems (I surely don't, usually I have at least 4 ) - in the Scene buttons, check the Simplify tab. It contains a slider which limits the global percentage of child particles that are displayed & rendered in the whole scene. You can easily reduce the amount of particles to say, 50%, or whatever fits.
