Here is a quick tip on what I do to feather objects in Photoshop:

Run the lasso tool a short distance around the object you want to isolate from the rest of the image then cut and paste it into another layer. So that the layer contains only the object and the rest is transparent.

Then use the quick mask mode with a small brush that has a small amount of feather and paint a line around the outside and in close to the object. Leave quick mask mode, go into standard mode and now you have a selection closer in on the object. Hit delete to get rid of everything inside that selection, go to Select->Deselect and use a larger eraser tool with more feather and run it some distance from the outside of the object. You may erase part of the outline of the object but I find that it will blend better in a new background.
