Description Lately, I've seen many artists challenging themselves to remake their artwork they made several years ago. With such challenge, you can see how much you've improved throughout the years, or - even if you didn't change your workflow significantly - you can compare how you build your final work based on the same idea or concept. This inspired me to start my own REBOOT series. I pick old works, and re-build a similar scene based on the same idea or concept (that's why I use the term "reboot" instead of "remake" ).

For the first attempt in the series, I picked one of my favorite scenes, "Sanctuary" from 2009. This was already quite a challenge, because - apart from some minor things - I was and still am pretty satisfied with the original result, and, halfway through the process, I realized that rebooting an iconic work might not be the best idea. Even though my skills (might) have improved, that artwork is a part of my "history", and it's out there, with its beauty as well as its flaws... just think of rebooting Star Wars... better CG, but still... it's hard to explain, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

The original Sanctuary: 00angelicdevil00.deviantart.co…

But even though the next REBOOT will be a scene that was easy to forget, I just wanted to finish Sanctuary 2017. I did a couple of things differently - even in the original version, I wanted the temple ruin to be on the top of a rock arch, but I didn't have the skills and the tools to make one. So, this time, I modelled an arch myself (the basic shape was created in VUE with primitives turned into a metablob, and I sculpted the details in ZBrush). I also used way more complex materials and ecosystems; instead of a single layer of procedural rock material (plus a pretty uniform ecosystem), the new arch and mid-ground mountains have ~8 layers of hybrid materials, including seamless bitmaps and fractal-based procedural materials as well. The lighting model has also changed from standard spectral to photometric.

The scene took awful long to render, and the 3 Windows updates out of nowhere (despite the fact that I re-scheduled them) challenged my patience even more. It was quite a ride!

I am not familiar with Vue, but how did you set up the lighting? Was it done manually or an HDRI? Beautiful render!

I used VUE's photometric lighting model. There are virtually countless options to set up (outdoor) lighting and atmosphere in VUE, but you can also switch to environment mapping, if you prefer using HDR or EXR-based IBL.
Thank you!

Is that the temple where Stephen Strange learned magic from the Ancient One?

It's Ta-Prohm temple ruins from Cornucopia3D I purchased several years ago. Tried to find it, but it looks like it's no longer for sale
Sorry, I'm not familiar with Dr. Strange (heard of it, though)

There is a certain higher level of maturity in this in the assymetric composition and muted colors yet high light contrast.

Thank you! It's less dramatic than the original, but there's a slight difference in quality

This is a great scene.   I would love to know what kind of system and RAM you are using to be able to render out images like this?  How long was the render?

Thank you! I actually make my personal work on a pretty old system - i7-2600K (still works like charm), 32 gigs of DDR3, and the GTX 970 Ti (4GB) is a newer addition. I honestly don't remember how long this one took to render, since the render got interrupted several times by Windows updates.

Thanks for the information.  Now I see the difference.  I'm plodding along with only 12 GB DDR3.  Time to add some more I suppose...

With personal projects, I was actually pretty OK with 16 gigs for a long time; I ran into memory issues only once in a while... but 32 gigs do make a difference.
Not at work, though. If we need to render scenes (animations as well as stills) with multipass or G-buffer enabled, sometimes we max out 64 gigs as well.

Both are great, but I think I like the original better.

Thank you for your feedback! As an artist, I also find the original more eye-catching, although the lighting is lower quality. This one has a different mood, but not as powerful as the original indeed.
