Description Between gigs Gamzee busks at subway stations and the streets. Rent is pretty expensive in New York, even for a shitty studio apartment in Brooklyn. Karkat makes minimum wage on his tech support job, and even then he’s barely hanging on to that due to his frequent outbursts and general poor customer service; so it lands on Gamzee surprisingly to pay for most of the bills.

He plays acoustic guitar for busking but electric bass in his band. Other band members and band name are TBA… aka I have no idea

I adore your humanGamzee.

Really though I had to comment on the idea of Karkat working TECH SUPPORT of all things. Just, my god. I am easy going to a FAULT, and I had to quit my tech support job before we even got out of training just because all the angry and stupid people I had to talk to was making me feel literally sick with stress. Karkat will have ulcers before he turns 25 if he stays in that job. XD

In all seriousness though, I really do love your interpretation of Gamzee.

Karkat should open up a Love Counseling service on the side. Considering, you know, that is what he does by accident all the time ever anyway. Best to capitalize on it. b

(I admire your dedication to drawing extras and thereby making this scene so believable. And also everything else that you are amazing at. IE EVERYTHING.)

I busked in Toronto, Canada and found it to be one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever had. You get paid proportionately to what you bring to the table. Its a VERY modest living, but what do you really need right?

Hmmm, well it was the summer of 2010, a hard time of my life and I was working through many personal, emotional and psychological issues. During this time I voluntarily chose to live on the street. It sounds terrible I know, but really it was the middle of Summer in a big city, I really don't understand how anyone may starve in that situation, there's always food available, free laundry is sometimes happened upon, and various place to wash up.

I had spent $15 on a South African Djembe (hand drum), which was cheap because of a rather large crack in the side of it. I had asked a local music store owner how to fix it (and still owe him $15 for the lesson, lol. I still plan on paying that back). Then hit the streets for some money. Within a month I was playing well enough to cover meals throughout the day. It really was a job that paid proportionately to how well you performed, and this was a quality in work that I had been looking for. When I wasn't drumming, I was expressing myself in every possible artistic outlet I could find, as I found that when you're experiencing such a powerful state of emotional turmoil, your own creativity skyrockets. It was truly an artistic summer.

Even though it was a very difficult time, it was also very important to me and I don't hold any negative memories about that time, but really hold precious the lessons that I learned then as well as the people I met than.

Now, having sorted out many things, I have returned to high school, and am preparing for University next Spring with the hopes of achieving a PhD in Japanese Language and Cultural studies.

I thing that is a decent summery, if you have any questions, please ask away, I like to think that I am very open.

that's amazing!!! wow, I'm so impressed! can you tell me the general reaction of the people around you? were there particularly difficult days, and/or particularly positive days? thanks so much, I'm trying to do research for this and having a firsthand recollection is the absolute best! You don't have to answer anything you're uncomfortable with, btw!

Nanen In reply to 021 [2011-06-30 07:58:47 +0000 UTC]

Its no problem, I cant say that I did much personal exploration if I couldn't talk about it, lol.

For the most part the crowds would just ignore me as they went on with their day, sometimes they would hang around, other times I would get chased away from my chosen spot by bothered shop keepers, complaining customers, etc.

Also here in Toronto its illegal to busk without a permit, which at the time was $130, and involved an audition, and I would have been told where to perform. Needles to say I didn't have the money for that so I had to keep my eyes out for law enforcement.

Some days were better than others, for example it was hard to find a place to perform when it was raining as I wanted to keep my drum dry. For that reason there was some days where I would either try to mooch off of my new friends, or find other places to find food. Some times I had some money left over from previous meals or the previous day. Sometimes you could kind of pick up on the atmosphere of how the people around you felt and off of that you could tell a little haw well the day was going to go.

It was rare that I had any nutritious food as produce is a bit more expensive that the full and long lasting feeling you get from greasy food. It was quite important to do what you can to keep from looking desperate. The audience wants to be cheered up from your presence, therefore it was a priority to keep from being in a situation where you were distracted with things like hunger or violence.

I cant think of anything else off the top of my head, but again feel free to ask anything! I do look back on these times fondly and even occasionally consider doing it again, although my motivations would be different...
