Description

Megalosaurus lived roughly 166 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic Period in what is now Oxfordshire, England. Though a complete skeleton has never been found it stands out in the annals of paleontology as it is the first non-avian dinosaur to be named and studied using modern scientific techniques and its remains were among those that were sited when Richard Owen named and categorized the group Dinosauria, now known by all as Dinosaurs.

Many estimates of size and anatomy were made and later proven false as more dinosaurs were classified and made available for comparison. The current science places it as a theropod, the same group of two legged dinosaurs that includes T. rex and modern birds, with an estimated length of 30 feet with weight estimates being between 2,200 to 6,600 pounds.
