Description I finally have a clear idea about the kind of armors the Ajshar, one of the feline species in mt fantasy setting, typically use. They usually are made by small plates joined together by chainmail, and they offer a decent amount of protection and mobility. This one in particular is inspired by Turkish and Russian mirror armors.
It took me a loooong while to make this drawing, mainly because I drew and colored the body under the armor as well, on a different layer. This way I can use the same base in case I wanted to draw another concept in the future.

Anyways, hope you like it! ^^ I'm still trying to understand how digital art works, but I think I'm making progress!

Very interesting armour! While I love you more westerner-looking armor as well, it's nice to see some more easterner-feeling as well!

Thank you so much! Indeed, eastern armors are extremely underrated!

Always loved the concept of the mirror armor types. The maille is nice and tight and the combination of steel and brass almost gives a somewhat regal look to it. Love it :3

Agreed, these armors are simply gorgeous! Thank you so much Dano!

By the way, I had a random question. Since you are a blacksmith, do you think a one-handed character could practice that profession, if he had a prosthetic hand? Of course that would limit severely the usefullness of that hand, but at least he could hold firmly some items.
(Not speaking of high levels of smithing, just basic medieval-village stuff, like tools, knives and horseshoes) ^^

DanoGambler In reply to 0laffson [2018-04-30 23:15:38 +0000 UTC]

It would certainly not be easy. Maybe if left hand on a righthanded, he can get himself a prosthesis with a mechanical spring-lock tong, like a welder's tong, you know. Then he's gotta lock the tong around the workpiece with his right hand first before hammering away with his right. If it would be the RIGHT hand on a righthanded, then the prosthesis would have to have a rigid arm with an attached hammer.Β
Even the most seasoned smiths drop steel on the floor because of the awkwardness of tongs. He'd be in for a ell of a challenge even with the easiest of things.Β

I'm asking for Kari, the one-handed cat I drew with Shadi a couple times. He needs to find a decent enough job, so I thought about blacksmithing. Thank you so much for your reply, I'm glad to know it's at least possible, even if extremely challenging. He doesn't lack the willpower, though, so he will probably find a way to be at least average at what he does.

This armor design is so damn awesome and ofc it is packed with awesome detail! Don't even let me get started how awesome that flower ornament thing in his abdomen is! Β
Also I think it really fits for the cats in your setting and it will be awesome to see more of it later on! Β

Thank you so much! Β  Pretty much that "lotus" symbol has become a recurring thing for my cats, I'll have to find a meaning for it.

Not bad. Will you try to draw your character in Cuman armor? It kinda reminded me that way when I see it.

I love how your version of Ajshar armor is something in-between chainmail and plate armor - it looks both flexible and strudy enough to deflect blows. The decorated chest plate with the lotus emblem is especially impressive, and I see that his bracers also has a flowery motive.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

0laffson In reply to AstarGoldenwing [2018-04-10 04:51:00 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, it's made by plates and maille together, it offers more freedom of movement on the chest area compared to a breastplate or brigandine! Β Β  The lotus is pretty much a symbol they put everywhere, I should find a meaning for it.

I like the armor. Before to read your description, the armor remember me to iberian armor (well, the iberian never use a chainmall), but, I said by the desing.

...chainmail's a bitch when you get your fur in it, ugh!
I mean, looks great! xD There's this sense of tragedy when you design these beautiful armors, carefully crafted, because I know from your other stories, in the end, they get the crap kicked out of them, and will never have an army or a country again.

0laffson In reply to runewuff [2018-04-10 04:49:05 +0000 UTC]

Haha maybe! I have no clue how it would feel (he'd wear clothes under it, in any case, or maille alone would be not as efficient)

Thank you! ^^Β  Haha, indeed. All their craftsmanship is lost forever!

Hello:
Β That is a very neat design... I cannot stop thinking the ammount of time needed to draw the chainmail though .

Β I have made my first drawing with a character with armour (ven if light leather-like material) so I am now understanding about the needed times and patience.

Β So, light armour for agility? It sounds interesting .

Thank you a bunch mate!

Haha not too much actually, because I simply copy-pasted the maille texture all over the place

Not too light, to be honest, since mail still weighs a lot! At least it offers a lot of body movement though!

Β I kinda figured, as I would do a similar thing, hehehehe.

Β Well, not like slow-moving humanoid tanks at least . I am thinking if I would add chainmails to adult warriors in my setting.

The-Urocyon [2018-04-04 18:06:20 +0000 UTC]

Nice! I always love how you design your armor. I do have a question however...

Wouldn't chain-mail be difficult for a furred critter to wear? The fur getting pinched, caught and pulled by the metal links would cause great discomfort, especially during periods of prolonged movement. I've been thinking about this recently (as I'm guilty of putting chain-mail on my own characters) and have decided to use scale mail myself for now on... Sorry, just a thought, and as always it's amazing to see what your next work is!

0laffson In reply to The-Urocyon [2018-04-10 04:39:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

He most likely wears clothing underneath! Honestly I have no idea how much chanmail would pinch over fur, it probably also depends by the rings' design, since some are flatter than others.

DragonStrider In reply to The-Urocyon [2018-04-04 20:55:41 +0000 UTC]

You don't wear chainmail on your bare skin, it goes with a padded shirt underneath like a padded jacket or gambeson. And as a person with long hair who has worn a mail hauberk I can say that it did not leave me bald. A person holds it for you and you sort of dive into it and remove it the same way.

Russian (and Eastern European in general) weaponry is extremely fascinating, mainly because they have a clear influence both from Western Europe and the Islamic world.

I like traditional stuff more too, but I can't deny this has its advantages! Β  Thank you a bunch for all teh support!
