you made a basically black and white image aiming for low contrast? XD i do like it lots tho!
If you want to try softness start with a neutral background instead of black, or black bg and a neutral background of the main head and build up the highlights and down with the shadows.

thx for your advice mate, in fact i usually started with a dark red or dark grey background. it was not for technical reason but more cause i found it easier to visualise what i wanted to create from a black canvas.
in those days i was doing things with 0 artistic knowledge and i spent days on paintings that could have been done in 20mn ...
hopefully i ve learned a little since then and your advice might comes at the right moment as i m going crazy with backgrounds
plus on this one for some reason i had to print it, and i realised that most of the contrast was lost on prints. in the end i ve done a mess with levels and stuff so the print was ok. but on a screen now that i look at it it s not that great.
anyway i m always happy to get some tips thx.
