Ok, I'm trying not to do the "aw shucks" thing. For this kind of work, you're almost never given the angle that you'd like, since the cars are jammed in together in a lot. So it's a matter of getting what you can. Not to take anything away from the artist (me), note the long shadows. I tried to get the late day light, but had to put up with bystander's shadows. That's just how it is. On rare occasions, I get to shoot in a different setting, like on a quiet street, and I'm in heaven.

One car on the Utah salt flats? I can barely conceive of that, but it would have to be heaven. I'd probably be there the day before to see how the light comes down when it's not critical - probably use my own bike or car - hell, even a rental car would tell me what I need to know.
Your friend's show - is this like a formal show or a cruise night? I ask because it's 2 different things. If it's a cruise night, I'd just go for fun and pix. Plus you get to see the problems of shooting these. A show is different altogether. Bear in mind that at a proper show, the judges won't even look at a car unless the hood is up, so all the hoods will be open - spoiling your shots. Almost hate to say it, but cruise nights are almost better since most of the hoods will be closed, and even if they're not, if you can find the owners (and that's a whole other thing), most will be gracious and close the hood for you if you ask. Be sure to ask about the car - something, anything. Owners love this, and I guarantee you'll learn something interesting, and almost every car has a story behind it. You might have seen several pix of a 1940 Indian motorcycle in my gallery. That one was destined to be sold in France, but narrowly escaped either a watery grave or a short life because France had fallen just before it set sail. See what I mean? Always a story!
Ask your friend where & when the local cruise nights are in your area. Go to that one, and ask around. You'll find that there are often cruise nights within easy driving distance every night of the week during the season! Because of the social aspect of these nights, the cars are parked together and the owners bugger off to talk to their friends, so finding out who owns what can be a challenge. Don't know if it'll be of use, but one of my journal entries might have some tips for this niche of the photographic world. [link]

Ah, so you are up and posting...
I just added a couple of pics of a unique hood on a Chevy StreetRod. Thought you might like to see `em. (in VintageArt folder at the top)

I saw them earlier as I went through the Transportation category. I tend to do that every day. But my net connection is tenuous today - sometimes it's great, other times it's slower than my patience. I tried to get to one to fave it, but gave up after a few tries. One of my uploads went quick, this one.... not so much.

Great! Thanks for the favs too! I post my edited work in the "manipulated" category. The shots posted this mornin' deserved to be posted without the edits. On ISP's, we live in the woods behind a ridge and the only service available is HughesNet, the satellite provider. Can be s l o w except for mornings so i do know what you mean. I rarely try to post at night & i only post screen size shots. Added a note today that higher resolution, non-edited photos were available. No interest yet... BTW, most of the cruise-in's are over here but we have one more next weekend. I'll enter our Studebaker and be sure to take the camera. Sorry for the length of this reply - i'll leave you alone now...
