Description FURAFFINITY FILE: [link]

This is somewhat a continuation to:
DA:
FA:[link]

Even though I am specifiying canid, this refference could be used for almost any mammal that have digitigrade legs.

The top two large drawings show the most realistic type of digilegs- the 5-piece. Which consists of frontal thigh, butt/back of thigh, lower knee, calf, and lower shin padding. Which, will create the most accurate form. The downside to using so much foam is that the suit will be hot. Thick foam does not breath.

- Now, the difference between top left and top right are the proportioning. Top right shows the common digileg proportioning, where the "shin" section of the digileg is much shorter compared to the "foot" section. (For a refference, your human foot creates the toes of the digileg). The top right dimensions are very compact, and good for young, springy "comic" characters. Whereas, the top left shows more realistic proportioning with the 5-piece foaming. (See top link for proportioning details).
(And yes, technically the entire front of the leg (thigh and lower knee) could be made into one piece like the 2-piece legs tend to be, however, I find the legs have better movement if you separate the knee.)

The bottom left leg shows somewhat and example of 2-piece and 3-piece foaming. Do not get me wrong 2-piece leg foaming can be done very well and look great although, it all depends on what type of effect you are going for in your suit. For the avereage person, I will suggest a 3-piece. Which consists of thigh (which comes down to under the knee), calf, and lower shin padding.

- The number one thing about legs that some people screw up is the placement/length of the foam pieces. For example, bottom middle sketch shows a bad foaming job (which unfortunately if fairly common) 2-piece foaming HAS potential! (2-peice being the most common type of digitigrade leg, consisting of a large foam piece for the thigh that will also go below the knee, and calf padding.)
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE KNEE COMES DOWN FAR ENOUGH AND THE CALF COMES UP FAR ENOUGH. THE LEG SHOULD BE CLOSE TO THE SAME THICKNESS/WIDTH ALL THE WAY DOWN. (Except in the upper-thigh/butt area sometimes). Bottom right shows a good example of 2-piece foaming.

It's all about creating the right shapes.
Hope this helped, and remember guys, NEVER WASH THE FOAM; they are like big sponges and can deteriorate very easily. You need to make the foam either removable (and can be replaced held on just by the shape of the fur or my personal prefference: velcro/snaps), or you will just never wash it, which is kind of gross. FEBREEZE DOES NOT WASH! Dx

oh my goodness, tysm for making this!! this really helped me get the proportions right on me leggies --- this is my first time making a fursuit, and i was terrified it was going to looks horrible when done. At least I know the legs will look alright, though!

This should prove to be helpful for my Sly Cooper fursuit since it seems he has these kind of legs. (I may have to try a combination of a few of the types that you show since he has such a specific muscle mass on his legs and thighs) I have question though: Can you glue the foam padding to faux fur to keep it in place and then make a seam with Velcro to keep it on yourself?Β

I want to make something like a ferret but I'm not sure how! I've see suits that make the legs look shorter and I don't really KNKW what to doΒ

To make the legs shorter, you use the technique called dropped crotch. All you have to do is add the thigh padding a lot lower on your leg. And instead of having the fur go across your crotch it's around the lowered thighs.Β

Good luck!

I saw your post about digitigrade legs and I wondered if you could help me figure this outΒ
I'll be cosplaying Azir from League of Legends (check the link)Β news.cdn.leagueoflegends.com/p…
and as you can see he's got some rather interesting legs! He's a badass emperor with minions and I want to build digitigrade stilts for this costume to give me that extra height and to be able to make those thin bird legs, but I'm not sure how I should do thisΒ

I've looked up digitigrade stilts and it's just not right.. english is not my native language so I'm having a bit of trouble explaining to you why I'm not satisfied with the shape digitigrade stilts give the legs, but I hope you know what I mean when you compare the stilts to the picture above.Β

Long story short: do you have any advice on how to achieve those bird legs and extra height?Β

i have an idea to make the five-piece foam more breathable. drill small holes in the foam and place some sort of mesh over the holes, much like the air holes in a bike helmet. then put the fur over it. this might help improve air circulation

*edit* (I read the comment now... I couldn't prior because of work and my lunch hour seems so short 8\)

How does one walk technically in the realistic digigrade legs?Β
I read how it bends at the knees so my guess is that it's basically the same as one would normally walk? XD

I'm highly interested in making the realistic digigrade legs but those are my main concerns at the moment!

I pretty much answered myself there didn't I? LOL!

Thanks, by the way for making this! It answered a whole bunch on how to properly foam digigrade legs for me!
For the life of me I couldn't puzzle out how to do so and keep it anatomically correct... but this was the perfect answer! s

I appreciate it so much! ^_^ Sorry that I almost forgot to mention this before! O_o;;;
Plus I didn't know that bout foam! Thanks for that info too! I think I'll go with snaps on the inside... =3

This was my original idea, soon I ran out of fur fabrics so I have a tail, head, movable lower jaw, and shirt piece. (I still have enough to make gloves I just need time.

The ankle is something I've been struggling with, if you attach it to your shin, is its movement under the fur when you flew your foot really obvious? I didn't think you could attach it to both your shin and your leg otherwise the foam would tear, its seems no one wants to cover this in tutorials!

Thank you for creating this, fursuits are my new hobby and I had some problems with the digitigrade look. I try to make legs that have the illusion but are still slender.

thanks so much for making this reference. though, I do have a few questions.

I'm considering looking either to order one or make one, and the animal I want to use is a kangaroo. seeing how their legs go, would it be anymore different in comfort for that?

Well, it could depend on how the character stands the majority of the time and if it's Anthro or Quad.
A kangaroo's dimensions are alot different, and I'm unsure at the moment how you could effectively do the legs... looking at other's fursuits.. it seems like it COULD work. (I found this example: [link] ) For best results you might try looking into using leg stilts.
But let's see.. this is a quicky from me that might work:
[link]
You might even be able to stretch the dimensions even more.

Thank you! And I can try. I personally do not have much experience either. /^^\
Not sure when I'd be able to get it done, have a crap ton to do before school starts.

Well, you're welcome!!

And it doesn't matter, I'm sure you'll do it very well, because it looks like you have a lot of knowledge about animal paws and legs. :3
But if you haven't got the time you shouldn't bother yourself on doing it. ^^
