Description Going through my old Urbex folder I came across this, a shot I actually quite like.

A patients private room in Whittingham asylum.

:EDIT:

HOLY COW!!! I got a Daily Deviation! I don't know what to say, I'm sat in a room with all my friends and I've been swearing for about 5 minutes!! Thank you so much ^ScENeYmE for suggesting this!! And ^MC-Frizzle for featuring this!

I am freaking beyond words, I never ever thought I'd get a DD

I have to say I really, really like this. It is gorgeous and powerful. The way the destruction seems to emanate from the window is simply beautiful. (there are more broken things near the edges, framing and drawing the eye in to the window).

I also love how the lighting fans out from the window - could you picture how that would look at sunset with the light all golden? The broken room gilded with sunlight. It would only work if the window faced the right way, but it would look fantastic.

Your composition is awesome, the only thing you might want to change is to shift just slightly to the right or crop out the edge of those pipe thingies. They're just a little distracting.

The only other thing I'd suggest would be putting a subject in there - a figure silhouetted by the window would give it a stronger story. Although the concept of this empty, abandoned place that has been destroyed is great, by adding a person it can really make the viewer start to wonder and imagine why someone ended up in such an unusual place.

The pipe things are a radiator, really old stlye over here

In recent Urbex shoots I've used a "model" for this sorta thing, but never felt it worked right. Might need a better gasmask

Beautifully written critique! You've got me thinkin' about heading back at sunset now!

Real or heavily photoshopped? The image blurs the lines between the two so much that I can't even tell, but that is in no way a bad thing, it's so awesome that it doesn't even matter.

Like an abandoned building after humans have been purged from the earth or a natural disaster has taken hold of humanity and old buildings are left to decay, this image evokes that feeling.

Just plain amazing is the only way I can properly describe this photograph.

The building crumbling, the plant life growing on the inside and the paint peeling off the wall, I love it.

It's mildly photoshopped, I used one JPEG image stopped up and down for a 3 image HDR. Adds a lil more depth to the shadows.

To be honest I never thought this would get any attention at all, let allon a DD.

Thanks for your time man, really appreciate the view

Edited it be. Not vastly I made a HDR out of 3 images made from the same JPEG, so its a fake one really.

Light wasn't much different, just added a lil more depth and feeling into the shadows.

Thanks so much dude, plus it was so much more epic in caps

I love it I just wanted to say how lovely it is!You see I have a love for pictures of abandoned buildings! And what's more, this isn't edited. But of course you need some constructive criticism therefore maybe take it from a different angle,a blurred background or if you want to push the boat out,add some life.Continue with your fine photos!a.deviantart.net/avatars/f/a/f… " alt=" " title="FABULOUSplz"/>
now that's all I can think of so i'm going to waffle to get the number up to a hundred this may take a while so prepare for compliments!

Hahaha thanks

What do you think a blurred background would acheive? What sort of life did you have in mind?

And it is edited, just not particularly heavily, its a "fake" HDR made with 3 JPEG images from the same image file.

Glad you like it though Thanks so much for the many compliments!

Easy to forget how quickly our hallowed settlements give way to nature. Nature resides wherever it pleases. The very moment we stop paying attention, living things we thought conquered by walls and fences come creeping in and sprawling comfortably across the floors.

The time of day that this photograph was taken provides the perfect amount of light; providing just enough to see and yet leave the place dank and uninviting. It appears that the camera's flash was not used or needed (or perhaps was overpowered by the sunlit window). The shadows filling the room's corners lend greater dichotomy to the harsh sunlight cutting through the center, and enhance the sense of this place's abandonment. The complimentary colors that are present further vivify this improvised terrarium. The green ceiling, mosses and vines are offset by faded red flooring not unlike running blood, enhancing the macabre disrepair.

This place provides a great variety of textures as well. Damp mosses blanket the floor between chunks of crumbled ceiling and mixed coarse substrates, balanced against a smooth ceiling and dry crackling wallpaper. There is a symmetry to the room's construction, but the attempts by this viewer to orient himself along those lines are quite dizzying. The angle of the camera (or perhaps a lens I'm not familiar with) is quite baffling in that respect, as are the playing of light and shadows in unusual places. I can't deduce whether or not this room truly is crafted symmetrically, cementing a notion of further abnormality to it's existence.

Though not a point on which a piece is generally weighted, the title strikes me as being excessively spartan. It could be argued deeply inspired and fully deliberate, but I find it doesn't frame this dynamic subject justly. Indeed, a quick search reveals dozens of other works titled "Room", but I digress. It is what it is. This is a piece made sublime by merit of cold hard facts of the human species' place in nature in spite of our best efforts and imaginings of separateness. I envy the photographer. This is but a picture of one corner of one room. To be there... the tactile nature, scents and sounds of this betrayed contrivance (which was once an asylum no less) can only be truly appreciated when one is bodily there I'm sure.

......

I'm quite blown away by what you've written here. When I shoot a photo, I do it because I like what I see and I want to capture it. This was a room I poked my head into so very breifly and only began to enjoy the photo nearly a year after it was taken. To see so much in something I've captured is incredible. I thank you so much for taking the time to write it, though words alone cannot express it.

After the response to this picture that I've had I only wish I'd spent more time appreciating it myself. It was a wonderful place (the whole wing of that particular building), like humanity had vanished and we were all that was left.

Thank you again.

This shot is absolutely breathtaking. It shows the beauty and darkness of the room, and it also has a wonderful array of colors. An asylum is a hard thing to shoot because too many a time it comes out cold and doctor's office almost in its look, yet here you have captured a beauty and divinity that is unique. It shows your audience the beautiful insanity that ranges in an asylum. This picture is well worth a DD!! Hats off to you! You are obviously a very skilled photographer, and I look forward to seeing more of your beautiful work!

It's just sad in so many ways. But beautiful to....I cant explain it except it makes me want to cry everything looks so lonely and just forgotten by even the plants that are growing there.
I'm guessing the patients wanted to escape just like the plants are trying to do.
