I adored it when she rode the Thanator.

Same here. I hated seeing all the animals get hurt/killed, but it added realism that wouldn't have been there if James Cameron had cleaned it up.

That's one of the things I admired Cameron for. He didn't skimp on the grittiness, but he didn't really over-do it either. Maybe some people would disagree with me on that part, but considering the vast technological difference I think he found a good balance. Made it all the more awesome when Pandora kicked ass in the end too.
