I just kind of draw it. I had to look at photos of braids the first couple times to get the idea, and then I just winged it. There's usually no rhyme or reason to my methods. Although if I have to draw a braid in a really dramatic position I will draw two guide lines were the sides are, just so it doesn't look oddly bent.
