Description At first, the world was dark. It was sunless, and the people lived without light. The Old Man had hidden away the sun, keeping its light and warmth for himself.

The Raven saw this, and flew to the Old Man. She stole the sun from Him, and flew as quickly as she could to the ground. With that bright ball of burning fire in her beak, she flew directly into the smoke and ash and flames as she returned it to the sky.

When Raven returned to earth, her once beautiful feathers were black. She had once had feathers of a rainbow, but they had been charred by the brightly burning sun.

This is a myth from my childhood. Its origin is Native American, although I no longer recall from which tribe. I was the lucky recipient of a set of beautiful Prismacolor Pencils from ~thing1thatiam. Because it was such a lovely, bright, and vibrant set of pencils, I decided to use as many as I possibly could for my first sketch with them.

Unfortunately, my scanner was out of commission for about two months, so this is very late coming, but I am so excited to be able to post it. I might add that this is also about three inches longer than is shown, as there is a limit to my scanner's capabilities.

~ Prismacolor pencils, watercolors (touched up slightly in photoshop so the computer version looked more like the real version)

(note: In some versions of the myth, the original feathers are white. I prefer this version, because rainbow feathers are so much more fun to draw <3)
