This is the way I see it (if SD was real). They're all hippies living out of their van, and look at the obituaries to see if someone died nearby. They go inside the "haunted house" so Fred and Velma can get it on, and Shaggy and Scooby can eat any left over grub the departed left behind. While everybody else is having fun, Velma is doing actual work and solving the mystery to get reward money to pay off living expenses.
Why else do you think they pair themselves off like that all the time? Velma and Freddie, Shaggy and Scooby.

I guess ghost hunting was more of a fetish than certain existing sexual acts out there. If anything, the truck was always crowded (and Shaggy never seemed to think about the girls all that much).
