Description Wednesday, January 19, 1937, was the passing date of former Locomotive Superintendent of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, John Aspinall.

The engine pictured above is such a cute little one!  It is one of the two surviving L&Y Class 21 0-4-0ST "Pugs".  These engines were built between 1886-1910 and were used as shunters.  They were fit with an 8' 10" boiler with a 3' diameter and only had a wheelbase of 6'.  Aspinall later ordered the class to be modified, shortening the wheelbase by three inches to 5' 9", enlarging the cab, and lengthening the tank.  Aspinall's successors Henry Hoy and George Hughes added to the class after Aspinall's retirement in 1899.  The last locomotive was delivered in 1910, 4 months before the first withdrawals.  All class members except Nos. 917 and 918 made it to the 1923 Grouping.  By the formation of British Rail, there were only 23 of the original 60 class members left.  The last one was withdrawn in 1964.  Today, Nos. 19 and 68 survive into preservation, carrying on the L&Y tradition.

Let us remember the railwayman, J. A. F. Aspinall.

Cheers,
Jonathan
