The engine shown above is one of Raven's 5 4-6-2 Pacifics, classified as A2s. The A2s were built in 1922 and 1924, to counteract the building of the GNR Gresley A1 Class, which was also a Pacific variety. So as not to be outdone, as the NER was the largest company that went to form the LNER, Raven had two Pacifics built at Darlington Works in 1922, but were not completed until 1923. By that time, the NER and the GNR had formed with other companies to form the LNER and the A1/A3 Class and the A2s were found working together, instead of rivaling one another.
The class was essentially and enlarged version of the Z Class Atlantics. They also had one of the largest boilers ever used in Britain, at a diameter of 6 feet. These engines were successful but were underpowered compared to the A1s. After a test between the A1 and A2 Classes, Gresley ordered the stop in production of the A2s. The A2s were used on the East Coast Express from York to Edinburgh but were known for their high fuel consumption compared to the A1s. Another problem arose in their wheelbase, at 40ft, 5in. it limited their route availability. In the late 1930s, when the class was in need of heavy repairs, the 5 locomotives were withdrawn from service, never to run again. They were all scrapped by 1938.
Let us remember the railwayman, Sir Vincent Raven.
Cheers,
Jonathan
