Description I bundled up this afternoon , grabbed my camera and trudged out wandering in the woods around the creeks for about an hour and a half. I was heading back out of the woods home and looked up the trail and about 100 yards away was a year old moose calf on the trail! That's an instant stop – because where there's a calf, mama moose is not far behind!

Sure enough, there was mama peeking out at me from the woods not far from her calf! I came to a dead halt because cow moose with a calf can be very dangerous and have charged and stomped a person to death here several years ago. I just stood still and made no noise, figuring they would move on, as they were browsing for food which is hard to find with the deep snow we have now. Eventually they moved on far enough away that I could make it home. I got a few shots with my telephoto. 100 yards away was plenty close enough! It was a gorgeous sunny day around 20 degrees F.

Thank you so much! I guess some of the "unplanned" shots turn out better than the planned shots!

Wow. I've walked within a few feet of a moose before I saw it in the woods. They blend in so well.

You're right about that! That's twice now that I've been surprised by moose while out in the woods taking photos! I always am on alert, but even so...it's really hard to see them with all the snow on the trees!

Thanks so much! I never tire of seeing the moose. Just don't want to get TOO close! Great to see you and hear you're doing well! I am still recovering but much better, thank you.

Thanks Steve! It was so gorgeous that day and to have the moose peeking out - was a lucky happenstance!

yeah, the way he's peeking out. I'd love to live where you are. I'm on Long Island NY. Cars, traffic everywhere, too many people, everything crowded. I grew up in Queens NY, a million miles from your surroundings.

Nice! She really was nearly invisible, wasn't she?

I remember one year looking out the window into the back yard, and saw my neighbor's Christmas lights being dragged across the yard. I thought it was some kids being malicious, but it was a moose that had gotten tangled when he ate of the tree the lights had been attached to. What a surprise for us. When he left, he literally stepped over the corner of our back deck! Glad we were inside that night!

Yes she was! Oh my....these poor moose getting all tangled in the Christmas lights! Happens every winter! Yes, glad you were inside!

lol Yes.....my eyes always open wide when I encounter a moose outside! People here actually love "living with them around"! I've been here 45 years and never tire of seeing them! I'd just rather see them at a pretty good distance, thank you!

Yes as I remember you got a DD for a previous encounter with a moose. Sounds like you had quite an adventure Anita. Great shot.

I'm sure I remember you getting into a quandary with one of these a couple of years ago when you were trying to get back to your car! Thanks God you made it away safely in the end!

Great shot by the way!

You have a good memory Anna! Up here...to avoid these encounters, you would have to stay inside, as they wander at will the yards and even busy streets! You're just as likely to run up on a moose outside in your garden! Several years back I had been down on the ground working in my garden when my neighbor yelled, "There's a moose behind you"! I turned slightly to look behind me and sure enough there he was! He had walked up without a sound! Fortunately the stairs to my front door were only a few feet away! We need eyes in the back of our heads!
