Yeah, that didn't happen. Instead his lab blew up, with him in it. And the explosion, chemicals and other things in his lab caused his DNA to become intertwined with that of the various insects in his lab...mutating him into a humanoid bug.

The insect DNA has given him the ability to secrete a chemical that ignites when it comes in contact with air. He's also able to create sonic waves using his exoskeleton and wings that weakens the molecular bonds of objects rendering the objects more fragile.
