ok, how the hell did you get mental ray to render shadows and lighting correctly? i've been battling this for the past 3 weeks with not much improvement.... if you see what i've got here: [link]
i've got the shadows to not be solid black but through camera lenses and field-of-view tweaking...
if you could help i would be SO incredibly greatful
i neeeeeed to knowwwwwww

Hey, sorry for the late reply, but I've been hardcore busy with my Junior year in Aerospace engineering... Anyway, if you want photo-realistic rendering in MR, you absolutely HAVE to use Final Gather or Global Illumination (make sure one of these is turned on in the render settings). Also, there are various ways to create lights... The most realistic way (which is what I used in the above render) is to use an HDR map. After you get a .HDR file, you can apply it to any surface and, with Final Gather and GI turned on, it will effectively provide "light" for your whole scene. Another popular, and easier, way is to use "light cards". Simply make a white material with self-illumination set to 100 and apply it to a plane. Then you can position the planes around your scene to get realistic, uniform lighting.
Hope that helps.
