Description Through the Iris IV WIP completed

16” x 16” Pencil on Arches Hot Press water color paper mounted on maple
This is the last of the pure eye drawings…unless I do another one seriously though it has run its course and I have gotten what I needed from it, which is my interests in observing and understanding aging skin and the structure of the Iris I still am interested in this but it’s time to do a full face and torso in this technique and size. This drawing was completed as one of the three (Through the Iris II, III and IV) which will be on exhibit at ArtPrize 2013 Starting September 17.

This drawing was fairly complex the white hair was a challenge for sure, not erasing but leaving the white of the paper and then drawing into it is very time consuming but gives it by far the most natural look. I want to thank Dr. Mark Francisco for molding and letting me make him look a bit older. No wonder I get no commission work?!

Thanks for the good questions and comments through this wip-feel free to ask more I’m always happy to answer. Here is a link to show the size of this drawing.

What most impresses me abut this piece is the 'wetness' of the eyes. Great stuff!

But you’ve transcended hyper-realism. There’s something else going on and that’s what makes this fine art and not mere illustration.

Armin, I have been a fan for about 9 years....I want to give you a great compliment but everything that comes to mind fails, in some way, to do your work justice...so let me just say that discovering your work was like a planet getting hit by a huge asteroid and knocked out of orbit.  Hopefully, that was enough brown nosing to get a response.  ha    Do you have any video tutorials or such that I can take a look at?  Thanks!

i used to draw realistic in college but i think it's just technical "and you mastered this technique"..adding your touch to reality and drawing from inside is the real Art
i love your works but a bit freedom from strict realism will make them epic (:

Nour, thank you - observational drawing still has a lot to be uncovered the journey one takes to draw this way is discovery  and exploration of from and in those marks the give witness to the person's life your drawing, sure i can  snap a photo and basically have the image but i don't have the experience and that journey of discovery that this gives me.  At this point in my life im no longer interested in creating alternate reality but to try and understand the realities that are in front of me...in some of my other art forms, encausic, photography and painting that's a different story.  I so understand what you are saying i teach college and tell this to my students i still find there is lot so room in all "ism" from abstraction to this type of realm...thank you

Hey Armin,
I think I should clarify what I meant by my last statement - I just re-read what I wrote, and I don't think I did a good job at explaining myself: my apologies for not being clearer!

Question:
Many of your WIP shots show you drawing on a board that appears to be positioned at a 90 degree rotation.  Is there a specific reason for this technique?

1nimra In reply to Circulism [2013-11-26 12:56:42 +0000 UTC]

there is a "sweetspot" where i draw about 10" x 10" so i want to draw there also it keeps from sticking my hand into the graphite

I feel so damn sad nowadays. I feel I have no soul left. If I wasn't doing my art, guess I wouldn't be here appreciating how immensely deepening and enlightening such amazing skills can do to level others indirectly. Thank you.

Also, I imagine you stitch together photos in order to make your large drawings; it must be difficult at the borders.

i work form many photos and a mirror but dont stitch them together again i need the freedom to change things as i go

Do you usually work on a 1:1 scale of reference photos to drawing? Or occasionally zoom in on reference photos? Great work.

no never i like the photo to by much smaller or else the tendency to just copy the photo is to great, i invent a lot of it

Amazing.  Much more so because you preserve the whites, whereas the easier way would be to erase the whites out.  It is way harder, but looks awesome.
