I dont mean to offend you. In what i'm going to say im sure you have more experience, because i read somewhere you are a teacher in a university or academy (Dont remember correctly) ^^" Usually this cannot be called a drawing...Real drawings have far greater values...well i can't say values because its...ugly..to judge art by its price....im talking about artistic value if im saying it right... What im saying is that...such things are not so interesting because its just like a photo...every photograph can make a photo like this. Heh, these times even telephones can! But when you look at this from a different angle - that it's made by humand hand just with pencils...the amount of skill and mostly patience needed to create something like this is ASTOUNDING! o.O

Doesn’t offend me at all, that what Im here for to discuss this stuff.

To some degree machines do most of what we do, but without soul feeling ect. You can buy a chair at Wal-Mart for $20 but craftsman still make them with years of knowledge love and great craftsmanship, drum machines, are the just as good as a world class drummer? Even within photography you have great art and 99% schlock.

If copying without change, construction and re-invention, be it form a photograph or from life, then the creative process is not addressed, in this case I agree there is a useless element about it, it becomes a fundamental exercise at best. There is nothing wrong with these exercises if it improves your knowledge and skills as a technician. But if your aim is only to draw like β€œa photo”, I’m afraid you will never attain what β€œart” has to offer. Also I think too many photo-realists rely on technical eye candy alone, with no imagination, in some sense just a limited skill in observation and a stunted creative process. Working in this manner should be a foundation to build on not an end goal.

My goal as a realist is to understand complexities and details; my interest is how the human eyes perceive not how a camera sees. The hallmark of photorealism is capturing distortion and out of focus areas precisely how the camera does, I’m aware of these things and eliminate most of them. My journey began at the first look at this setting I was taken aback by its complexity I wanted to be part of this place to know it inside and out. To snap a photo you know nothing you understand very little but to draw this, to spend time with every twist of a branch every nuance of every leaf every root, you do becomes part of it.

I change and alter many thing from the reference photos to me they are just a blueprint an informal guide at best, I transform not just translate what I am observing. I look at small particulars of a place that cannot be seen or deciphered by β€œnormal” cameras. I delete, enhance, elaborate, exaggerate, alter and reinvent, and I do this with putting it through my own psyche. I change what’s in front of me, not for the sake of change but because it’s inevitable and expected, it’s filtered through 40 plus years of living. I have 100% control of every aspect of the final image can this be done with a photo and Photoshop? Maybe but not with my unique technical and artistic language.

SO amazing! I truly respect your dedication. How big is the original and how long did you spend on it, if I may ask?
