Description Andy Rogenbuck looking at “Face Study of Andy Rogenbuck” Graphite on paper

Always and interesting time when a model sees his/her portrait for the first time. Since I don’t do commission work, I represent them the way I want to, they have no say whatsoever and that’s the way I like it! Yet they always like the results, possibly because their vanity can’t be included in the concept. Armin

I'm not sure how I'd react to seeing something like this.. My vanity is of a different sort, if indeed it could be called that at all.  I could get off on attention, if it were something akin to the type a stand-up comedian gets, but I have never thought of myself as particularly pleasing to the eye, so seeing myself in such a large format, flawlessly recreated... I would probably avoid the possibility.

Looks like he was pretty comfortable with the experience, though.

No point in even going into my thoughts on the artwork.  I ran out of superlatives a long time ago.

amazing Armin.
i love seeing your work this way. this perspective adds an added element of insight into your work.
i can only speak for myself, but it leaves me feeling uplifted and inspired.
it's a wonderful feeling being part of your universe.
having this common bond as artists.
we may not have all seen the same heights,...
but we have all seen heights.
i hope that makes some kind of sense.
obviously feelings sometimes cannot be translated into words.

very well done.

wow this is quite the portrait! what paper are you using and did you use any charcoal/ if not what softness of pencil is used for your darkest value? i'm not quite sure how i like the background though. it's possible that in this photo the full essence is not shown but from what i can see the background isn't as fully rendered as the foreground. i realize that it may clash if both were as neatly rendered and could look like the portrait and the background were on the same plain. how did you decide on the approach for the background? would you ever blur the background or decrease it's value to create a separation in plains?

i have worked on these types of backgrounds before and got a lot of separation without blurring lines as in photo-realism which  i try to stay away from but your right the background isn't working for me and the shallow space issue is certainly part of that. It might be that it's ran its course and ended up somewhat half heated and an after thought, i do however like the figure a lot.  I use only graphite mostly 2b, mechanical pencils Graphgrear 1000, i use many layers to get it this dark and not shine as many as ten.  thanks!

Your not fond of it!? I find it to be my favourite piece. Maybe your best but what do I know ha.... I think it's the intricacy of the hair and beard and the subject offers a lot of character.

yeah i think the vanity aspect is interesting when they've had no choice! i mainly draw girls who always want to choose the ref-photo i use but even when i choose another they always love the result (apart from perhaps once) so what did he have to say about it Armin ? i think it's amoung your best works so i wonder what he though...

well you normally say when you post a drawing that 'always happy to answer any questions' so i'm gonna take you up on that armin! i've always loved the idea of spending 200 hours on a drawing but i'm simply not at the stage that 200 would make much difference from the 40-60 i usually spend so i'd just like to know after that time why in your opinnion you're not as happy as you'd like to be with it ...?

There are always things is set out to do, here light long hair and the beard fascinated me and freighted at the same time so I to do it.  My work only gets on target if I’m afraid of the process, let’s call it a “challenge”  I then rise above  it and (mostly) find the salutation.  After I finished Andy I went for a comfort zone  background which I did many times and this was not challenged and it came out weak, distracting and far from some others that I did that worked and the worked because I was in unknown territory.  This drawing is not a failure not in the long shot-yet the weaknesses are its complacency’s.  I’ve learned from this more than others that are more successful

Therefore drawing me really is a piece of cake: a plank sheet of paper, or just background, to be more precise.
Because I am, or rather I consist of, 100% vanity.
