Wow! What an explosive, dynamic shot! As others have commented, just look at the sheer power shown right here! Though he's bearing out toward the outer rail, as you said, despite the danger, it's provided you with an amazing shot. The angle, along with the dirt flying back just emphasizes the speed and raw power in racing.

Thanks, Jess. Β  They were actually bearing out somewhat, which made a pretty shot for me since it angled his shoulders and face outwards. Not so great for the race though.

Thank you! Actually, this isn't a head-on shot from the straight, the horse and jock were bearing out slightly, which angled his shoulders toward me.Β  Not safe race-wise, but it did make for an interesting perspective photograph-wise, as I get a head-on shot with a trail of dirt spraying up behind him angling off the image.

I get it, I do. I don't like the use of them either, but many jockeys swear they'd be in big trouble without them out there when a horse does what the horse in this picture is doing.Β  And since I'm not a jockey, I'm only a photographer, and I'm not putting my life on the line every time I get on board, I'm going to at least take their point of view into consideration.Β

If you look at the horse's body language you can see he's "bearing out".Β  His shoulders are pointed in my direction, towards the grandstand.Β  It makes for a great shot, but that is NOT the direction you want a horse to go.Β  Not only is it detrimental to the winning of a race, but it's dangerous to everyone involved when a horse cuts straight across lanes like that.Β  Going to the right hand whip at this stage of the race is an attempt to course-correct the horse and prevent him from getting any closer to the outside rail than he already is.Β  There are horses and people behind him in those lanes.Β Β  A collision is far more likely to injure or kill him and his jockey than that whip ever will.Β

In the frames prior to this shot, I can see that 1) the horse to the inside of this pair was bearing out badly and forcing them into further lanes 2) the jockey dropped the reins from his right hand and readied to show the whip first and gave the horse time to correct his course. The following frames, he looked over his shoulder, realized with some urgency that there were horses coming he would traverse, and in this frame 2) He is primarily swinging the whip in stride with the horse, he is extended when the horse fully extends, and his whip arm is NOT above shoulder height. In fact, the tip of the whip isn't much either and this was the apex of the swing, which suggests low force.Β  3) Following this swing the horse corrected and a cascade effect was prevented from occurring across the entire line.Β  Everyone finished safely.Β Β

The reality in horse racing is this. Jockeys don't actually like to use the whip either.Β  Why?Β  It hurts. No one in the industry is stupid enough to lie about that. And because horses are like people, you have no idea just how this 1400 lbs animal going 45 mph is going to react, you probably don't want to go to it unless you have to.Β Β  Most good jockeys are NOT "stick-riders". I have thousands upon thousands of frames of jockeys doing little more than holding it in their hands the entire race.Β  In fact, take a look at any horse racing photo here on deviantART.Β  MOST photos don't even have the whip being used whatsoever.Β Β  In my case, I have a few more than others, because lately I've been shooting a lot of maiden races and maiden race horses have trouble going in a straight line.Β  The point is: most jockeys will only go to it when they have to for correction or encouragement.Β  And when they go to the stick and the horse doesn't respond, regulations say you can't go to the stick again.Β  There are regulations in place and violators are severely penalized. These guys only earn an income when they ride, being barred from riding over a whip violation is catastrophic to their careers.Β  Excessive force is so stupid on so many levels, the vast majority of jockeys are not going to use the whip to any significant degree.Β

From the set of photographs I have, I can see that this pair became badly pinched between a horse that bore out and a horse that lugged in and the jockey corrected his mount and ended up squeezed behind them. Β  The kid only went to the stick twice in this entire race. Clearly, he never got close to using force, and certainly not excessive force. We may not like the use of the whip, but please give some consideration that its use here may have been necessary to prevent a collision.Β
