Description Feet are overrated. I love getting closeups of racehorses and jockeys like this.  Even zoomed in, I feel like that sense of speed is not only still there but stronger because of the intensity you can see in their expressions and body language that you miss when you zoom out.  Magazines want win photos with the whole horse in the image, but I like closeups.  Gotta time it just right in order to get an up close shot like this while still giving yourself that fraction of a second to zoom out again for the win shot. (Well, or use more than one camera.)

I love my job, and I'm very fond of the athletes I work with. All images are ©copyright 1pen and my sports media company. You may NOT use, replicate, manipulate, or modify this image without my permission. All Rights Reserved.

you are one of the best horse racing photographers.   But what track is this, Ruidoso?

Awww, thank you!   Nope! It's a track hidden in the middle of Salt Lake City (I kid you not!!!) visited only by those who race there.  Because it's in Utah, where gambling is illegal, the atmosphere is very different, almost like a big family reunion between trainers, jockeys, and owners. Most people don't even know it exists, fewer still know when the races are held (they are held only four days a year), or the fact while it's only four days there are several major races with major purses.  I love this track. It's Salt Lake City's best kept springtime secret.

It sounds like the county fair circuit in Wisconsin.   Although I don't know how many county fairs still have horse racing.  Most of the tracks are given over to stock cars now.   Although horse racing is still alive in some Midwest county fairs; my local paper just had an article printed about a local girl who drives harness horses.   Harness racing on the frozen Rock River in the winter used to be a big deal here when the blast furnaces were still running.  The iron company used to run Harvest Farms, which bred Standardbreds, draft horses, and champion cattle.

I totally agree with you there, you can see the sense of speed from the horse's hair movement and the clothing on the jockeys.  I think that in a way this close up is a bit more personal since you can see more details on the jockeys' faces and the horse's.  Great work, I always love your photography.

For a lot of these horses at this particular track, I'm the first big camera they ever see.  It's why I try not to make any sudden moves, eliminate all glare, run on silent, and give them lots of opportunities before and after races to sniff and investigate it.

Though he's probably just interested in the crowd, of which I'm a part.
