Description

One of the many sections that the Mattel State Police has at its disposal is its Air Wing which consists of six helicopters and one small plane. The section operates out of three bases throughout the state. The section’s main base sits on a former army airfield in the northeast region of the state. Prior to being a state police airbase, the base was known as Bishop Army Airfield. Unlike the other two airbases, the Mattel State Police solely own and run the field (the other two are located on Mattel Air National Guard bases). Because of this, the Mattel State Police have the following support vehicles on the base:

Cruiser 911, a 1986 Oshkosh P-19 airport fire truck serves as the base’s fire protection vehicle and is the agency’s only fire truck. Prior to its service with the state police, 911 served as an ARFF unit at one of the local air national guard bases, before being acquired by the state police in 2015.

Cruiser 2006, a 2016 Freightliner M2 4700 gallon fuel truck provides jet fuel for the base’s two helicopters.

Cruiser 2078, a 1993 Ford CF-8000/Elgin street sweeper is used to keep the runways clear. Before serving the state police, the sweeper was used by the state’s Department of Transportation to clean the state’s highways.

In addition to being an airbase, Bishop Field serves as the unit’s headquarters and has offices for the unit’s command staff. The field also is special in that, it acts as the agency’s Emergency Vehicle Operating Course (EVOC). The field also acts as a storage facility for vehicles that are not regularly used or are being kept in reserve.
