Description Part 2 of my "Elias and Sally switch places" AU for Part 1 is here: fav.me/daikavt

I really haven't fleshed out Sally's backstory since it's a very recent idea I came up with, but long story short, she ends up in the wilderness and has to survive on her own. Eventually, Elias does learn she's alive/or goes looking for her, only to find she's gone feral (think Tarzan or Mowgli) due to a lack of contact with other Mobians and sentient creatures. I felt that'd be an interesting route to take -- Sally having to learn how to readjust to civilization and a life she doesn't even remember.

I didn't put this under mature because it isn't like you can see anything revealing. She's about as "naked" as Sonic is, and IMHO it would've been silly to have her running around in a cave-woman dress.

Pose referenced from here: tasastock.deviantart.com/art/S…

ETA: I wasn't able to get this cleaned up as much as I wanted, but I don't think I'll have anymore time to work on it before the contest's end date

So, I figure since I commented on the other picture, you'd be curious what I thought of this. Hrr. Well, it's difficult to say, but I dislike the idea of Sally being "feral" in that sense. I don't think I care for "wild child" stories in general. Apart from that, though, the picture itself is really good. I love her angry expression. And for what it's worth, I agree that it doesn't need a mature tag.

Also, since I forgot to do it on the other picture, I too wish you the best of luck on the contest! ^^

Thank you very much.

I thought the feral child route would be interesting to go since I could explore Mobians a little more (since I try to approach them as intelligent, bipedal animals rather then merely humans in animal costumes). I headcanon that they don't act fully animalistic because it's not advantageous in their society, so older Mobians of their own species have to show them how to behave/interact with others. But in an environment with no one else around, how would that affect them? Archie didn't do anything with Elias' upbringing (he was partly raised by the echidnas on their island, and nothing remarkable ever came out of that, AFAIK), so I wanted to have something compelling going on with Sally. What would you have her doing instead?

You're welcome. ^^

I agree that it's interesting. Perhaps it would have been better to keep my feelings to myself. I'm not sure I completely understand my reaction; at any rate, it's a tangle and I don't want to talk about it here. But I don't want to dissuade you from your idea. For that matter I might well enjoy the final result, if you were to pursue it and flesh it out into a story.

That said; what would I have her do? Well, I don't think this plot would have occurred to me. : p But for the sake of the question, I'd probably put her in some dashing role. Possibly similar to her brother's position -- and canon -- but ignorant of her identity, or possibly a solo adventurer. Gallantry, chivalry and derring-do are much more to my taste.

Well, we all like what we like. I know where you weren't coming from a negative place or anything when you said that -- I know some people who would've been passive aggressive, rude, or demanding with their comments out of a desire to basically control my idea for certain reasons. You were simply sharing an opinion. You might like to know that I am thinking about doing some shorts based on this AU.

I've noticed it seems to be one of your preferences. Not that that's a bad thing though. I certainly enjoy the gallant swashbuckling adventurer type myself. myself. In your hands, I'd read something like that with Sally and Elias. But I wanted to let Elias have his time in the spotlight because he got screwed over so badly in the comics.

I'll touch on what they had him doing there: when he was brought back to be with the royal family, he sulked because there were lots of women who wanted him (oh poor baby, how terrible for you!), he was being manipulated by one of his advisors (in a plot-point that went nowhere), he ran away at one point because he didn't want the throne (this is a tiresome cliche that needs to go off and die somewhere), and while he was away he married a pregnant women and adopted her child as his own. It's like, why even have him as the older sibling if you guys are so scared of Sally not getting the throne and want her to look like the better person/heir? It was also telling to me how in the official art he evolved from a pretty boy into this guy who constantly seemed to have this jerky expression on his face. They did try running damage control in the end, but by then it was too little too late. I think the idea of a second Acorn kid has potential, so I had to do my own take on him.

To me, it feels like Archie has this obsessive need to wreck and nerf other characters in order to put up their favorites on their little thrones.

I am very happy to hear you say that. ^^ And I will keep an eye out for them.

Haha, thanks. xD I think prior to this I never considered doing anything with Elias, since he's not in any of the versions I've seen. But the other picture makes him seem interesting so I might.

They do sound like they treated him poorly. : \ I totally understand your desire to give him a better deal. What really jumps out at me from what you said was his running off to avoid being the king. I agree that it's an annoying clichΓ©. While in this case I can understand him not wanting the position, if he spent most of his life not knowing he was a prince and not receiving any training he might not even be a good choice; but the obvious thing to do would just be to pass authority over to his sister. Real royalty does that, I don't know why fictional royalty can't. The other really outstanding thing is him marrying a pregnant woman. That just sounds weird, especially if he didn't want female attention before. (Which I have to say also sounds weird.)

It wouldn't surprise me if they did. It certainly sounds like they have screwy writing.

Also, I forgot to put it in my first post, but I wanted to think that "cave woman dresses" are silly. It makes more sense for her to be nude, especially as she has a nice coat of fur. (And hay, 'most everyone in Sonic is nude anyway. Obviously clothes are just for fashion, same as in MLP.)

No prob!

If you ever get any ideas, I encourage you to play around with the character. XD Here, you can read his wiki entry which goes into more detail: sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Elias_Aco… I've written a profile for the improved version I created for my stories that I can show you if you want.

I agree. The thing is, I think he was aware that he was the prince. Which if I'm right, makes him look even more selfish and childish. He's like Edward VIII minus the Nazism sympathies. The thing with him and the pregnant woman (Megan) was soooo transparent. They just met and fell in love at first sight. To top it off, she didn't even have a personality. Pple complain about Disney romances, but they're far and above the ones in Archie. At least the Disney princesses have actual personalities. Megan could be described in four words -- "she loves and supports Elias". That's it. We know absolutely nothing about her interests, her likes, her dislikes, etc.

Yeah, it really is nothing but someone's horrendous published fanfiction.

Thanks for understanding where I'm coming from with the cave woman dress thing. Giving her clothes would be like a squirrel at your local park going "oh, I'm nude. Better put something on." But Sonic fans are weird about certain characters not having clothes. They wig out over Sally and even Antoine's not wearing any pants, but then they never say a single word about Sonic and Tails' only wearing shoes. In my fics, I have characters use cloches as a way to show off their social status/job/personal wealth. And of course, fashion like you said.

... I can see what you mean about his expression. Also, why does he have a fox tail? -- it reminds me of something you said, about it being impossible to tell what species Sonic characters are.

Heh, I was thinking of Edward VIII when I made my previous comment. As in, he abdicated and let someone more qualified have the crown. And ech.

That's an impression I've had of the comics for some time.

You're welcome. ^^ Yeah, I've noticed that about Sonic fans. I can understanding someone wanting to clothe all the characters, but not how one could hold a double standard like that.

Because Archie can't/or doesn't bother learning how to draw squirrels. But there are characters in way worse shape. Were it not for their official descriptions, you'd have no idea what they were supposed to be.

I don't understand it ether. I'd love to hear their logic for why they think this way, but at this point I have a strict "do not engage" policy when it comes to Sonic fans.

xD I'm not sure I could have told he was a red squirrel; if I hadn't known otherwise, I probably would've assumed he was a fox. The fact that foxes have noticeably long muzzles seems lost on a lot of people, but Sonic art in general tends to portray all animals with similar facial structures. Which I am not a fan of, although I can deal with it. Usually.

xD I can understand that. Though I can't help but be curious too how they would justify it.

1Unicorn-on-the-cob In reply to Flammifleure [2016-10-11 07:03:36 +0000 UTC]

Believe it or not, he's not a red squirrel in canon. There he's supposed to be part "ground squirrel" (and Max a full-blooded "ground squirrel"). I started calling him a red squirrel instead, because if you've ever seen a ground squirrel, then you know the Acorn men don't look anything like any kind of ground squirrel. In the past, a lot of fans thought the Acorns really were foxes before canon started calling them ground squirrels.

I can't put the blame solely on the comic for that though. SatAM didn't do a good job with making what species certain characters were either (Antoine was theorized to be everything from a shrew to a fox to a corgi). Sonic art style just bugs something fierce. It's so cookie cutter and awkward-looking. Half the characters look like dogs or aliens when they're supposed to be something else entirely. That's why I prefer fanwork where the artist puts their own twist on the characters. Though it's gotten harder and harder over time finding pple who can do that and are good at it/or have a pleasing style...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Flammifleure In reply to 1Unicorn-on-the-cob [2016-10-11 10:32:56 +0000 UTC]

... A ground squirrel.

Now that you mention it, I did see that before when browsing through your gallery. And if I remember, you had it so that the Queen was a chipmunk? Mm, I'm not sure, though that would explain Sally's lack of tail. Though my own inclination would be just to give her a tail. Or, perhaps, to say she lost it in a fight.

A shrew. xD But no, I agree the show is not that good at delineating species. I think we are in agreement about the art style, just it doesn't bug me, as much. But then I haven't been exposed to it as much, Sonic being something I'm only hovering around the edges of.

(Also, in double-checking to make sure I knew what a ground squirrel was, I learned that the chipmunk genus is called "Tamias", which is Greek for "treasurer" and refers to their habit of hoarding nuts and things. I now want to make a chipmunk character with that name, it is so cool.)

Yeah, just smacks of pure laziness/lack of research, huh?

Yes, but the queen was a chipmunk in the comics as well. I don't mind that, but I did make her look more like one, since she was basically a longhaired Sally there. I did give the whole tail issue wth Sally some thought and decided to say that her lack of one is a deformity. I don't think she has one in SatAM is because A) they designed her like a Hollywood chipmunk (no tail like the Alvin and the Chipmunks characters or Chip and Dale), or B) the animators just drew a random anthro and only started calling her a chipmunk when people started inquiring what her species was. But those are just theories (the second one would explain why Max and Antoine's species aren't exactly clear either).

I guess because of his pointy nose and short tail? TBH I never really thought about what he was. Then I started seeing him being called a coyote and was like "Okay, but that doesn't explain his tail though." Yeah, you're pretty lucky like that, lol.

Hey, that is pretty cool. XD You should create a chipmunk OC named Tamias!

I'd call it errant ignorance to not have some idea of what a ground squirrel was in the first place; and stupid to just toss in the term if one doesn't know what it means.

"Let's call him a ground squirrel." "Wassa ground squirrel?" "I 'unno; a squirrel that lives on the ground? Let's just go with it."

And I see. I probably saw that her being a chipmunk was canon, but forgot it pretty thoroughly. And eh, who knows? I'm afraid I find the "drew a random furry" idea plausible, but don't like to attribute that level of incompetence tot he creators. On the other hand, is it really better to assume they were just too lazy to draw them well enough to convey a species? I guess I feel it is.

: 3 I shall!

Not gonna argue with that. XD

I legit wouldn't be surprised if that was how their thought process with picking Max's species went! Is it really that hard to pick up a book or something, look at the different squirrel species, and just pick one?

LOL, yeah, both those theories make the creators look pretty bad. But I have no pity for them in my cold dark heart.
