Description HMCR 8560, the Huntsville & Madison County Railroad's newest engine, sits in the yard awaiting its first assignment on the railroad. It's paired up with the railroad's other operational B39-8, HMCR 8527. This engine was delivered on a local last week to the HMCR. The other B39-8 that's in ex-LMX paint, HMCR 8539, had too many issues with it for the railroad to find it profitable to repair and use, so now it sits next to their offices as a parts engine.

I wondered about the fate of the other unit. The condition of the paint would have been a good indication of it's mechanical condition.

HMCR has gone from 1 old EMD switcher to what, now five 2-3000 hp units? Business must be good. Of course, I see or hear trains almost every day now. Back when HMCR started, there were only running three days a week.

It's currently a parts unit, but according to one of the crew members, it may end up getting repaired, as well as the old EMD SW9 that they had been using (that broke down). They are also currently repainting this engine into a slightly modified version of the ex-LMX paint scheme.

My first thought was that it was a badly tattered Family Lines color scheme.

Well, the other ex-MMA B39-8 (HMCR 8539) is on its way back up here from Birmingham after getting the broken traction motor in it fixed. The HMCR repaired a bunch of other issues with the engine, so it'll likely be running again by Christmas, according to the railroad!

It isn't. This is the paint GE used for their leaser engines. The railroad is repainting the engine, but they are keeping the color scheme.

I remember these guys well when BN leased them in the late 80s!

Do you have any pictures of these from back then? I wonder if one of them went to the HMCR (Numbers would be 8527, 8539, and/or 8560).
