Description There is a small remote village in Turkmenistan called Derweze. In the Turkmen language, Derweze means "The Gate".

In 1971 Russian geologists drilling for gas found what they were looking for in a subterranean cavern. Unfortunately the cavern collapsed, swallowing the drilling rig and releasing huge quantities of toxic gases including methane. They then decided that to avoid fatalities from the gases, including in the low-lying village of Derweze, they would ignite the gas and wait for it to burn itself out.

They're still waiting. Almost forty years later the crater is still a flaming sulphurous cauldron.

The locals call it "The Door to Hell".

The furnace there is star-shaped, and it reminds me of the Earth's core. While the idea could look frightening to most people because of the huge temperatures and nuclear activity there, I deem it as a sign of life instead: the planet's nucleus is the very "soul" of the Earth itself, it's the beginning of life. Not to mention, when planets are born, they start of as an infinitely dense and small amount of matter, and later stratify after the primal explosion (this is a consequence of the Big Bang).
Most probably, it's me who tends to look at the bright side of things due to my nature. Yet, I really find this fascinating
